Every game of the 2014/15 Premier League season rated and ranked

25 May 2015 07:01

Way back in August, we thought it might be a good idea to rank every single game of the Premier League season.

So we got reporters at the grounds to give every match a score out of 100 for sheer entertainment value and tell us a bit about the game. Then we collated them all into an enormous list.

It’s been a fun season. Here is every single game – from the opening encounter between Swansea and Manchester United, to the relegation drama of the final day – rated and ranked.

380. QPR 0 Crystal Palace 0 (28/12/14)

Score: 21

Crystal Palace caretaker boss Keith Millen checks his watch
Crystal Palace caretaker boss Keith Millen appears just as bored as everyone else (John Walton/PA)

Dreadful game with no goals and almost no chances. Palace clearly weren’t inspired to new heights by caretaker boss Keith Millen after Neil Warnock’s sacking.

379. Everton 1 Southampton 0 (4/4/15)

Score: 26

Everton's Phil Jagielka celebrates scoring against Southampton
There’s a Phil Jagielka in there somewhere (Peter Byrne/PA)

Horrible stuff for any neutrals watching, but Phil Jagielka’s goal gave Everton back-to-back home wins for the first time in a year so their fans weren’t complaining too much.

378. Leicester 0 Hull 0 (14/3/15)

Score: 27

(Nigel French/PA)
This is about the most interesting photo we could find (Nigel French/PA)

With both sides struggling at the wrong end of the table, this laborious goalless draw lived down to expectations. The only incident of note was Tom Huddlestone’s red card, but even that wasn’t for anything interesting.

376=. Everton 0 West Brom 0 (19/1/15)

Score: 28

Everton's Leighton Baines and Kevin Mirallas talk before the latter misses a penalty against West Brom
“And you’re absolutely sure you’re not going to miss…?” (Peter Byrne/PA)

This match will forever be remembered as the one where Kevin Mirallas took a penalty ahead of Leighton Baines – and was branded “despicable” by Gary Neville for doing so – but in truth it doesn’t deserve to be remembered at all. It was terrible.

376=. Hull 0 West Brom 0 (6/12/14)

Score: 28

Hull manager Steve Bruce on the sidelines
Steve Bruce clearly enjoyed this one about as much as our reporter did (Richard Sellers/PA)

An early penalty miss from Graham Dorrans summed up an entirely unspectacular encounter in which both sides had the look of those resigned to a long relegation struggle.

374=. Burnley 0 Tottenham 0 (5/4/15)

Score: 30

Tottenham striker Harry Kane looking frustrated
A rare picture of Harry Kane not celebrating a goal (Lynne Cameron/PA)

Harry Kane did not prove to be the inspirational captain Spurs were hoping for. His first match as skipper – only a few days after he scored on his England debut – ended in a dour goalless draw.

374=. Southampton 0 West Brom 0 (23/8/14)

Score: 30

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman on the sidelines during Southampton's match against West Brom
Even Southampton boss Ronald Koeman struggled to get excited about this one (Chris Ison/PA)

A proper stinker played out between two teams who chose to leave their big-money summer strikers, Shane Long and Brown Ideye, on the bench. Dire stuff.

372=. QPR 0 Chelsea 1 (12/4/15)

Score: 32

Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas celebrates scoring against QPR
The phantom of Loftus Road (Matt Dunham/AP)

This was a miserable match, made only slightly notable by Cesc Fabregas’ late winner and John Terry being pushed over by Charlie Austin. It also all but killed off any hope of an exciting end to the Premier League season, pushing Chelsea out of the realistic reach of Arsenal.

372=. Crystal Palace 1 Stoke 1 (13/12/14)

Score: 32

Stoke's Peter Crouch challenges for the ball
Peter Crouch’s unusual facial expressions proved to be the highlight (Anthony Devlin/PA)

James McArthur and Peter Crouch found the net but beyond that, nothing happened. Woefully short on quality and incident.

369=. Leicester 2 Southampton 0 (9/5/15)

Score: 35

Leicester fans hold up a Nigel Pearson banner
These Leicester fans don’t have their head in the sand (Jon Buckle/PA)

Leicester’s march towards Barclays Premier League survival gathered more pace against Southampton with a sixth win in seven games lifting the Foxes three points clear of the relegation zone. Riyad Mahrez enhanced his growing reputation by scoring both goals in the 2-0 victory, although Saints were poor and their impressive campaign is beginning to fizzle out.

369=. Burnley 0 Leicester 1 (25/4/15)

Score: 35

Nigel Pearson celebrates Leicester's win over Burnley
A joyful Nigel Pearson and an angry Nigel Pearson don’t look that different. This one is joyful (Lynne Cameron/PA)

A match startlingly low on quality but not without tension as Leicester climbed out of the relegation zone for the first time in five months. Jamie Vardy scored the winner from zero yards, converting from on the line to prevent Michael Duff suffering the ignominy of an own goal.

369=. Aston Villa 0 Crystal Palace 0 (1/1/15)

Score: 35

Alan Pardew in the stands at Crystal Palace
You can say what you like about Alan Pardew, but that’s an excellent scarf (Nick Potts/PA)

New Palace boss-in-waiting Alan Pardew was watching from the stands, but probably wished he wasn’t. The highlight was Yannick Bolasie hitting the bar. Dour stuff.

368. Stoke 1 Hull 0 (28/2/15)

Score: 37

Hull manager Steve Bruce puts his head in his hands
Steve Bruce wasn’t the only one who couldn’t watch (Mike Egerton/PA)

Peter Crouch came off the bench to continue his good scoring form with a header against Hull in a game that had little else to recommend it. Managers Mark Hughes and Steve Bruce certainly served up better in their Manchester United days.

365=. Everton 1 Burnley 0 (18/4/15)

Score: 38

A 'no ball games allowed' sign at Goodison Park
And none played in this particular match (Anna Gowthorpe/EMPICS)

Another home win for Everton – another forgettable game. Kevin Mirallas scored and Ashley Barnes – famously not sent off for a challenge on Nemanja Matic against Chelsea – saw red for two reckless first-half challenges.

365=. Manchester United 0 Southampton 1 (11/1/15)

Score: 38

Southampton's Dusan Tadic removes his shirt after scoring against Manchester United
Yellow card (Jon Super/AP/PA)

While it was enjoyable – if you’re not a United or Portsmouth fan – to see Southampton getting their own back for their defeat at St Mary’s, there wasn’t much else enjoyable about this low-octane game. Dusan Tadic got the goal.

365=. Burnley 0 Sunderland 0 (20/9/14)

Score: 38

Burnley manager Sean Dyche on the sidelines
Even Sean Dyche found this one pretty tedious (Richard Sellers/PA)

Described by our reporter as “cobblers”, it was forgettable stuff except for a late Ashley Barnes effort which hit the bar, denying Burnley their first win.

364. Aston Villa 0 Sunderland 0 (28/12/14)

Score: 39

Sunderland's Santiago Vergini tackles and Aston Villa's Christian Benteke
If you prefer tackles to goals, this game was fine (David Davies/PA)

Fabian Delph became the third Villa player to be sent off in four games, but that was about the only event of note as Sunderland drew for the 11th time this season.

359=. West Brom 0 Liverpool 0 (25/4/15)

Score: 40

Mario Balotelli battles for the ball with West Brom's Chris Brunt and Joleon Lescott
Mario Balotelli looks for a gap between two defenders (Nick Potts/PA)

Jordon Ibe hit the bar, but it was lethargic stuff from a Liverpool side who still had a legitimate chance of propelling themselves into a Champions League place.

359=. Everton 2 Leicester 2 (22/2/15)

Score: 40

A young Everton fan wearing a Superman hat
Considerably more super than the game (Martin Rickett/PA)

Proving that goals don’t make a game any good, a really poor Everton side needed a late deflected Romelu Lukaku header to claim a point against Leicester. One of the worst performances of the season from Roberto Martinez’s men.

359=. Chelsea 3 Sunderland 1 (24/5/15)

Score: 40

Chelsea's Didier Drogba is carried off the pitch by his teammates
Who needs a stretcher? (Mike Egerton/PA)

Farcical scenes at the Bridge saw Didier Drogba, on his last performance for the club, handed the captain’s armband then carried off after 30 minutes in a pre-planned substitution. Sunderland did their best to turn it into a football match rather than a coronation, but it wasn’t great to watch until Chelsea’s title celebrations began.

359=. Aston Villa 2 Leicester 1 (7/12/14)

Score: 40

Leicester defender Paul Konchesky is shown the red card
Never touched him, ref (Mike Egerton/PA)

Leonardo Ulloa ended his goal drought but that was as good as it got for Leicester. Alan Hutton scored the winner for Villa, but could have been sent off in a clash which saw the Foxes’ Paul Konchesky given a red card.

359=. Manchester United 1 Crystal Palace 0 (8/11/14)

Score: 40

Juan Mata celebrates scoring for Manchester United
It doesn’t Mata how they go in, they all count (Nick Potts/PA)

A drab affair. Palace put 10 men behind the ball. United put 10 men in front of it, but only won courtesy of a deflection and rubbish goalkeeping. At least it stopped Louis van Gaal feeling lousy.

353=. QPR 2 Newcastle 1 (16/5/15)

Score: 42

Emmanuel Riviere celebrates scoring for Newcastle
A rare opportunity to celebrate for Emmanuel Riviere (Dominic Lipinski/PA)

An abysmal first half brightened solely by a goal of questionable quality on both sides. Emmanuel Riviere’s fluke for Newcastle came after woeful QPR defending, while the visiting relegation battlers collapsed after the break. True relegation fodder indeed, with Newcastle’s defeat leaving them still needing points on the final day to avoid the drop.

353=. Manchester United 3 Burnley 1 (11/2/15)

Score: 42

Manchester United's Wayne Rooney and Chris Smalling celebrate a goal against Burnley
He seems excited about something (Martin Rickett/PA)

After Louis van Gaal produced a dossier to prove Sam Allardyce was wrong to claim United played long-ball football, his team responded with a wildly unconvincing performance against Burnley. They may not have played route one, but it was still scrappy stuff.

353=. QPR 0 West Ham 0 (25/4/15)

Score: 42

Charlie Austin sees his penalty against West Ham saved
Wait, the ball’s supposed to be in the net now, isn’t it? (Stephen Pond/PA)

Charlie Austin’s missed penalty – the third of the season saved by Hammers keeper Adrian – gave the game a bit of drama and there were chances at both ends, but neither side had enough quality to score.

353=. Leicester 0 Stoke 1 (17/1/15)

Score: 42

Bojan Krkic celebrates scoring against Leicester
None of the Stoke players can keep up with Bojan (Jon Buckle/PA)

A lovely goal from Bojan Krkic – in what proved to be his last Premier League match of the season before a ligament injury sidelined him – raised the score of an otherwise uninspiring clash.

353=. Leicester 0 Manchester City 1 (13/12/14)

Score: 42

Frank Lampard celebrates scoring for Manchester City
Still not in New York (Nick Potts/PA)

On-loan midfielder Frank Lampard did the only thing worth talking about in this game, extending the conversation about his scheduled return to New York City.

353=. Crystal Palace 2 Leicester 0 (27/9/14)

Score: 42

Mile Jedinak scores for Crystal Palace against Leicester
Mile Jedinak does a goal (Andrew Matthews/PA)

Coming off wins against Everton and Manchester United respectively, Palace and Leicester were both disappointing. The hosts were the least worst, though, and won with goals from Fraizer Campbell and Mile Jedinak.

352. Liverpool 1 Stoke 0 (29/11/14)

Score: 43

Steven Gerrard, sat on the bench, looks at Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers
If looks could kill… (Peter Byrne/PA)

As many eyes were on the bench as were on the pitch. That’s because Brendan Rodgers made the big call of dropping Steven Gerrard – which worked in the sense that Liverpool won, but not in the sense that the match was pretty terrible.

350=. Burnley 0 Swansea 1 (28/2/15)

Score: 44

Jack COrk celebrates scoring for Swansea against Burnley
Cork’s popping (Ryan Browne/PA)

A grim afternoon for Kieran Trippier, who scored an own goal, Burnley, who suffered another defeat, and anyone who was unlucky enough to be at this untidy and uninspiring affair.

350=. Manchester United 1 Arsenal 1 (17/5/15)

Score: 44

Wayne Rooney and son Klay on the pitch at Old Trafford
Fans worried Manchester United’s youth policy was going a bit too far (Richard Sellers/PA)

A glamour fixture that produced a real bore draw on what looked like Radamel Falcao’s last Old Trafford appearance and could well have been Robin van Persie’s too. It left Arsenal on the brink of securing third place as people desperately looked for something to get excited about at the end of the season.

345=. West Brom 1 Stoke 0 (14/3/15)

Score: 45

(Nick Potts/PA)
He’s considerably happier than anyone who actually sat through the game (Nick Potts/PA)

Tony Pulis beat Stoke 1-0 when he was manager of Crystal Palace last season, and he did exactly the same thing again here. Brown Ideye scored the only goal of an uninspiring game.

345=. Everton 0 Sunderland 2 (9/5/15)

Score: 45

Sunderland's Connor Wickham challenges Everton's Ross Barkley for the ball
You’re supposed to kick the ball, Connor (Peter Byrne/PA)

Sunderland flop Danny Graham scored his first goal for the club 28 months after joining from Swansea. It helped Sunderland score a vital – and almost entirely undeserved – win, as they scrapped for survival.

345=. Aston Villa 0 Burnley 1 (24/5/15)

Score: 45

Danny Ings celebrates scoring for Burnley
Danny Ings shows off his knee slide to any potential buyers (Scott Heavey/PA)

Danny Ings got his farewell goal for Burnley, who signed off from their doomed Premier League campaign with a win. The Tim Sherwood bounce seemed to have worn off for Villa – but they were already safe, so who cares?

345=. Burnley 0 Manchester United 0

Score: 45

Angel di Maria playing for Manchester United against Burnley
Angel di Maria shows his team-mates how it’s done (Martin Rickett/PA)

Angel di Maria looked impressive on his United debut but few others did in this forgettable goalless draw.

345=. West Ham 1 Everton 2 (16/5/15)

Score: 45

West Ham goalkeeper Adrian fails to save a shot from Everton's Leon Osman
“I got it! I got it… I don’t got it…” (Adam Davy/EMPICS)

It was hardly an emotional goodbye for what looked like Sam Allardyce’s last Upton Park match in charge of West Ham. A lovely goal from Leon Osman was the highlight in a pretty poor encounter between two teams with little to play for.

341=. Everton 0 Liverpool 0 (7/2/15)

Score: 46

Jordan Henderson and Steven Naismith confront each other as Liverpool take on Everton
Inset comment about passionate local derbies here (Clint Hughes/AP)

It was Steven Gerrard’s final Merseyside derby, but not one that lingered long in the memory. Everton were content to stifle their hosts, and Gerrard and co had no answer.

341=. Leicester 0 West Brom 1 (1/11/14)

Score: 46

Chris Brunt celebrates scoring against Leicester
The agony and ecstasy… (Mike Egerton/PA)

Esteban Cambiasso has done plenty of good stuff for Leicester but it was his own goal that gave West Brom the points, extending the Foxes’ winless run to five matches.

341=. Stoke 0 Leicester 1 (13/9/14)

Score: 46

Leicester's Leonardo Ulloa celebrates with David Nugent
Leonardo Ulloa and David Nugent are hella excited (Dave Thompson/PA)

Notable only really for Leonardo Ulloa’s continued impressive goalscoring form, and commentators’ continued efforts to pronounce his name correctly.

341=. Manchester City 6 QPR 0 (10/5/15)

Score: 46

Manchester City's Sergio Aguero celebrates scoring against QPR
Is it okay to celebrate when it’s this easy? (Mike Egerton/EMPICS)

Some one-sided games can be thrilling but this was just depressing for all concerned – not least the City fans, who must wonder why they couldn’t have played like this when it still mattered. The answer to that might be because when it still mattered they weren’t up against an utterly feeble QPR side, who succumbed to relegation without a whimper. Sergio Aguero claimed the easiest hat-trick he’ll ever score.

340. Sunderland 0 Liverpool 1 (10/1/15)

Score: 47

Sunderland's Liam Bridcutt and Liverpool's Steven Gerrard challenge for the ball
BUNDLE! (Scott Heppell/AP/PA)

Lazar Markovic struck his first league goal for Liverpool as Sunderland played poorly but the Reds still struggled to break them down.

338=. Burnley 1 Southampton 0 (13/12/14)

Score: 48

Southampton's Dusan Tadic reacts after missing a penalty
That’s what a penalty miss looks like (Peter Byrne/PA)

Tom Heaton saved Dusan Tadic’s penalty on the hour mark and with 73 minutes gone Ashley Barnes scored the winner for Burnley. Southampton gave ample ammunition to those who had questioned their place in the top four.

338=. Burnley 0 Liverpool 1 (26/12/14)

Score: 48

Burnley boss Sean Dyche and Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers embrace
Is it just us or is there something Mafia-esque about this? (Dave Thompson/PA)

It was a win for Liverpool, but that’s about all that could be said for a lacklustre Reds side. They started Boxing Day in their lowest position since the 1992/3 season, and there was little to suggest they didn’t belong there.

329=. Everton 0 Tottenham 1 (24/5/15)

Score: 50

Everton's Steven Naismith attempts an overhead kick against Tottenham
Yes, that’s an overhead kick from Steven Naismith (Clint Hughes/PA)

A typical end-of-season feel to this encounter at Goodison Park that was at least lit up by another goal from Harry Kane, or as the Everton announcer dubbed him upon his substitution – ‘Harry Keane’. You’d think a season featuring 32 goals for club and country would have made his name stick in many people’s minds and his glancing header in the first half here was the only real moment of true quality.

329=. Manchester United 0 West Brom 1 (2/5/15)

Score: 50

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie reacts after missing a penalty
This is what missing a penalty looks like (Jon Super/AP)

West Brom claimed their second straight Old Trafford victory – something they hadn’t achieved since 1959. Jonas Olsson scored the only goal, Robin van Persie missed a penalty and United slipped to a third straight loss.

329=. Newcastle 1 Stoke 1 (8/2/15)

Score: 50

Peter Crouch of Stoke celebrates scoring against Newcastle
Soak it in, Peter – this is your moment (Owen Humphreys/PA)

Super sub Peter Crouch rescued a point for Stoke as Newcastle’s traditional mid-to-late season drift set in in earnest.

329=. Aston Villa 1 Stoke 2 (21/2/15)

Score: 50

Aston Villa Tim Sherwood looks to the skies
“What have I let myself in for?” (Nigel French/PA)

Tim Sherwood’s debut as Aston Villa boss went from good to bad to worse as Scott Sinclair gave his side the lead, before Stoke came back and claimed victory through Victor Moses’ injury-time penalty. It may have been his first game in charge, but Sherwood already had a haunted look about him.

329=. Leicester 1 Aston Villa 0 (10/1/15)

Score: 50

Leicester City's Matty James and Aston Villa's Ciaran Clark have to be seperated before both being sent off
Group hug (Mike Egerton/PA)

Paul Konchesky had been wrongly sent off in the sides’ previous encounter but he had more fun this time around – he scored the winner for Leicester as Villa’s run of scoreless games stretched to four.

329=. West Ham 1 West Brom 1 (1/1/15)

Score: 50

Newly appointed West Bromwich Albion Manager Tony Pulis and Chairman Jeremy Peace look on from the stands during the Barclays Premier League match at Upton Park, London.
Tony Pulis experiences watching a football match while not wearing a baseball cap (Stephen Pond/PA)

New West Brom manager Tony Pulis was watching from the stands but probably wished he wasn’t. Why are matches with new managers watching from the stands always so bad?

329=. Sunderland 1 West Ham 1 (13/12/14)

Score: 50

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce
Sam Allardyce’s big unimpressed face (Richard Sellers/PA)

A poor game most memorable for Jozy Altidore somehow contriving to miss from three yards. Nice work, Jozy.

329=. Tottenham 0 Manchester United 0 (28/12/14)

Score: 50

Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris saves a shot from Manchester United striker Robin van Persie
Nothing slow about this Lloris (Phil Cole/EMPICS)

Manchester United dominated the first half, but found Hugo Lloris in unstoppable form, and playing two games in 48 hours caught up with them after the break.

329=. Aston Villa 1 Southampton 1 (24/11/14)

Score: 50

Nathaniel Clyne celebrates scoring for Southampton against Aston Villa
Nathaniel Clyne seems pretty happy with that (Nick Potts/PA)

Nathaniel Clyne came back from winning his first England caps to rescue a point for Southampton and deny Villa their first win in eight games. Saints weren’t at their sparkling best but still dominated.

326=. Hull 1 Sunderland 1 (3/3/15)

Score: 51

Steve Bruce and Gus Poyet after their touchline clash
“Leave it Steve, he’s not worth it…” (Lynne Cameron/PA)

This match scores 51 – that’s 50 points for the Dame N’Doye’s classy improvised opener and one for the scrap between Steve Bruce and Gus Poyet. Afterwards, Bruce said the pair were “grown men acting like a couple of children”.

326=. Manchester United 2 Sunderland 0 (28/2/15)

Score: 51

Referee Roger East sends off Sunderland's Wes Brown against Manchester United
Roger East absolutely definitely not sending off the wrong player (Martin Rickett/PA)

Wayne Rooney bagged a brace, but all the talk was of a bizarre refereeing decision which saw Roger East send off Wes Brown when it seemed to have been John O’Shea who fouled Radamel Falcao in the box. Afterwards, East said it wasn’t a case of mistaken identity, confusing pretty much everybody.

326=. Manchester City 1 Everton 0 (6/12/14)

Score: 51

Manchester City midfielder jumps to block a free-kick
That’s gonna hurt… (Jon Super/AP)

Yaya Toure secured the points for City, but that was secondary to the fact Sergio Aguero went off with a knee injury, causing City to try out a variety of strikerless formations over the following few weeks.

320=. Burnley 0 Stoke 0 (16/5/15)

Score: 52

Fans hold a banner supporting Burnley's Danny Ings
No worries (Dave Thompson/PA)

This one had a bore draw written all over it before kick-off and both sides were happy too oblige. Danny Ings did his best to provide some excitement but once his attempts to sign off at Turf Moor with a goal ran out of steam there was a sense of inevitability about this being goalless.

320=. West Ham 1 Burnley 0 (2/5/15)

Score: 52

Burnley manager Sean Dyche reacts to a West Ham goal
Blowing bubbles, spitting feathers (Adam Davy/PA)

Burnley slipped to the brink of relegation as Michael Duff saw red and Mark Noble scored from the spot. It was the first penalty West Ham had scored all season – the kind of trivia that provided Burnley fans with no comfort whatsoever.

320=. QPR 1 Arsenal 2 (4/3/15)

Score: 52

(Adam Davy/PA)
No caption required, really (Adam Davy/PA)

The hosts wasted a hatful of chances as Arsenal expected a cakewalk, and Rangers ultimately paid for that profligacy. Two quick chances were converted after the break as Alexis Sanchez decided to take control, and Arsenal were then able to slink back into mediocrity.

320=. Crystal Palace 0 Burnley 0 (13/9/14)

Score: 52

Crystal Palace's Julian Speroni saves a penalty from Burnley's Scott Arfield
Julian Speroni, saver of penalties (Nigel French/EMPICS)

Palace should have been out of sight before half-time, but their profligacy in wasting a host of chances almost came back to haunt them. Scott Arfield’s loose penalty allowed Julian Speroni the chance to save the Eagles’ blushes, but Neil Warnock’s men should still have claimed victory.

320=. Hull 0 Burnley 1 (9/5/15)

Score: 52

Burnley's Danny Ings celebrates scoring against Hull
We reckon there could a career in wrestling for Danny Ings if this football lark doesn’t work out (Lynne Cameron/EMPICS)

Danny Ings won the points for Burnley, but they were relegated anyway. The result also put an oddly lifeless Hull in the relegation zone and made them firm favourites to join the Clarets and QPR in the Championship next season.

320=. Chelsea 1 Liverpool 1 (10/5/15)

Score: 52

Liverpool give Chelsea a guard of honour
The most reluctant guard of honour in recent memory (Adam Davy/PA)

You know a game wasn’t great when at the end you’re still talking about a guard of honour – the one Steven Gerrard and his Liverpool team-mates gave the newly-crowned champions at the beginning. Gerrard actually scored on his final appearance at Stamford Bridge – and was clapped off by (most of) the Chelsea fans when he was substituted – but they couldn’t do anything to rouse a Chelsea side playing in third gear.

316=. Manchester City 1 Hull 1 (7/2/15)

Score: 53

Manchester City's James Milner celebrates scoring against Hull
Not so boring now (Jon Super/AP)

In the continuing story of Manchester City being rubbish without Yaya Toure, they needed a late James Milner free-kick to salvage a point against Hull.

316=. Crystal Palace 0 Aston Villa 1 (2/12/14)

Score: 53

Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke celebrates scoring against Crystal Palace
A primal scream of delight from Christian Benteke (Jonathan Brady/PA)

Christian Benteke’s goal lit up an otherwise poor affair, with the hosts wasting half-chance after half-chance and paying the price with galling defeat. Benteke’s calm finish proved enough to end Villa’s nine-match run without a win.

316=. Burnley 1 Newcastle 1 (2/12/14)

Score: 53

Burnley's George Boyd celebrates scoring against Newcastle
Watch those knees, George (Lynne Cameron/PA)

An unremarkable, occasionally untidy, Turf Moor scuffle lit up by George Boyd’s 20-yard opener for the hosts and Yoann Gouffran’s clever flick that teed up Papiss Cisse’s equaliser.

316=. Hull 2 Crystal Palace 0 (4/10/14)

Score: 53

Nikica Jelavic celebrates scoring for Hull
Nikica Jelavic celebrates scoring his side’s second goal by holding up one finger (Lynne Cameron/PA)

Not as entertaining as some of Hull’s early-season performances, but more effective. Goals from Mohammed Diame and Nikica Jelavic sealed the points for the Tigers, who, uncharacteristically, did not concede a last-minute goal.

309=. Stoke 1 Manchester United 1 (1/1/15)

Score: 54

Manchester United's Jonathan Evans and Stoke City's Mame Diouf
He’s behind you (Lynne Cameron/EMPICS)

United may have hoped to put a disappointing 2014 behind them with a strong start to 2015, but what they actually did was draw with Stoke. They did at least get a rare goal from Radamel Falcao.

309=. Manchester City 2 West Ham 0 (19/4/15)

Score: 54

Manchester City defender Pablo Zabaleta with his newborn child before the match
Pablo Zabaleta with Manchester City’s youngest fan (Lynne Cameron/EMPICS)

James Collins scored a contender for own goal of the season, perfectly lobbing Adrian with an attempted clearance, to set City on their way to a welcome win after a run of six defeats in eight games. Sergio Aguero got the other.

309=. Chelsea 2 Hull 0 (13/12/14)

Score: 54

Chelsea's Diego Costa, complains as he is outjumped for the ball by HullÂ's Alex Bruce
Alex Bruce works on some sort of gymnastic routine with Diego Costa (Alastair Grant/AP)

Not the dazzling display Chelsea have produced on many occasions this season – perhaps because they were getting over losing to Newcastle the previous week. Still, they were good enough to beat Hull.

309=. QPR 2 Burnley 0 (6/12/14)

Score: 54

Burnley fans at Loftus Road
One guy appears to be celebrating a goal that nobody else has spotted (Nick Potts/PA)

Dreadful first half, good second half. Burnley really should have scored at least one, but Charlie Austin scored yet again for QPR, showing the value of an in-form striker.

309=. Everton 0 Swansea 0 (1/11/14)

Score: 54

Everton's Antolin Alcaraz and Swansea City's Wilfried Bony battle for the ball
Antolin Alcaraz singularly fails to bother Wilfried Bony (Jon Buckle/PA)

A lacklustre (journalist speak for boring) game in which the highlight was Jonjo Shelvey’s late red card.

309=. Stoke 1 Newcastle 0 (29/9/14)

Score: 54

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew looks on as supporters hold up a 'Pardew Out' banner during the game against Stoke
Alan Pardew studiously ignores a banner (Nigel French/EMPICS)

Yet more uninspiring stuff from Newcastle, with more energy in the fans’ protests against Alan Pardew than the team’s performance. Peter Crouch scored the goal that sunk them.

309=. Liverpool 2 Southampton 1 (17/8/14)

Score: 54

Daniel Sturridge scoring for Liverpool against Southampton
Daniel Sturridge, one of the few players Liverpool didn’t sign from Southampton (Peter Byrne/PA)

Southampton pushed hard against the side who bought three of their impressive team from last season. Nathaniel Clyne’s goal led to a bucketload of jokes suggesting the Reds would buy him too, and there was enough for Saints fans to be optimistic about, despite Daniel Sturridge’s late winner.

293=. West Brom 1 Hull 0 (10/1/15)

Score: 55

West Brom's Saido Berahino celebrates scoring against Hull

James Milner celebrates scoring for Manchester City against Swansea
Even his goal celebrations are boring (David Davies/PA)

Yaya Toure scored twice and James Milner was also on the scoresheet to help Manchester City keep on course for second place in an enjoyable seesaw game. Gylfi Sigurdsson and Bafetimbi Gomis scored to put Swansea level after they’d fallen 2-0 behind, but City pulled clear again and rounded off their win with a goal from Wilfried Bony against his old club. Bony apologised to the home fans – but they had at least seen a cracking game of football.

5. Stoke 3 Arsenal 2 (6/12/14)

Stoke striker Peter Crouch celebrates scoring against Arsenal
There’s something about the sight of Peter Crouch with unmitigated joy on his face that we can’t help but enjoy (Mike Egerton/PA)

A fixture that often throws up something out of the ordinary – not always in a good way – produced one of the games of the season. Stoke raced into a 3-0 lead, and had a fourth disallowed – before Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey fired the Arsenal comeback. The sending-off of Calum Chambers blunted them a little, though, and Stoke held on.

4. Manchester City 4 Tottenham 1 (18/10/14)

Sergio Aguero celebrates his third goal against Tottenham
Sergio Aguero is better at scoring goals than you are (Jon Super/AP)

Despite the lopsided scoreline, this was actually a very competitive game for 75 minutes. Tottenham played some wonderful attacking football but found Joe Hart and, more devastatingly, Sergio Aguero in peak form.

Graziano Pelle and Dusan Tadic celebrate Southampton's fifth goal against Sunderland
Graziano Pelle and Dusan Tadic doing the kind of carefree celebration you can only do when you’re giving another side an absolute tonking (Chris Ison/PA)

If it’s goals you’re after, this one had them. If it’s competitiveness… not so much. But if it’s pure, unadulterated, did-you-see-that, oh-my-god, water-cooler-moment spectacle that does it for you – this was the game. Utter humiliation for Sunderland, but Southampton were awesome. Graziano Pelle scored twice, but the match belonged to Dusan Tadic, who set up half of Saints’ bracket-worthy haul.

2=. Leicester 5 Manchester United 3 (21/9/14)

Score: 93

Ryan Giggs, with his head in his hands, and Louis van Gaal on the Manchester United bench
Cheer up Ryan – it might never happen (Rui Vieira/AP)

Everything seemed to be going swimmingly for United as they raced into a 3-1 lead – the chip from Di Maria was a particular highlight – but Leicester swarmed all over their illustrious opponents to seal a riotous victory. Ulloa scored twice and Esteban Cambiasso was also on target. A joy for everyone except United fans.

1. Tottenham 5 Chelsea 3 (1/1/15)

Tottenham's Harry Kane celebrates scoring against Chelsea
Harry Kane is happier than Willian (Kirsty Wigglesworth/AP/PA)

Ah, where do we start? Sorry Chelsea fans, but there’s a certain amount of joy to be had in seeing a Jose Mourinho team concede five goals. Harry Kane scored twice, but really, the specifics don’t matter – it was all just gloriously, unpredictably bonkers. And at that stage, we didn’t even know we had the Bradford game to come…
