[LNB] The Tottenham striker has been in blistering form this season for both club and country.[LNB]He has six goals in nine games for Spurs, while he has also found the target three times in as many outings for England.[LNB]That form would have made Defoe a strong contender for a starting berth in Fabio Capello's side for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Ukraine and Belarus.[LNB]He admits he would have preferred to have been involved in international action over the course of the next week, rather than stuck on the training ground, but feels a rest could prove beneficial in the long run.[LNB]"I've always said any disappointment is a blessing but since pre-season I've felt sharp and things have gone my way both at club level and international level, so I can't really complain," Defoe told Spurs' official website.[LNB]"I can have a rest, get myself focused and make sure that in my next game for the club I'm really firing again."[LNB]ProtectionDefoe dislocated two fingers and suffered a fracture in his left hand during Tottenham's 5-0 mauling of Burnley on 26th September.[LNB]He is able to train as usual, but has been advised to steer well clear of physical contact for the time being.[LNB]"I can train, I can run and that's what I've been doing at Spurs in the last few days," he said.[LNB]"I've just got to be careful with contact. I thought it was only a dislocation but I've got a fracture in there as well.[LNB]"It's only normal to try and protect is so if I was to play, perhaps I wouldn't go into the game 100 per cent. It's unfortunate but I'll rest the fingers and hopefully get them right for the Portsmouth game (on 17th October)."[LNB]
