Crouch stakes his claim

Peter Crouch is hoping his hat-trick heroics against Preston will earn him a starting berth this weekend. The Tottenham striker bagged an impressive treble against the Lilywhites on Wednesday, helping Spurs to a 5-1 success in the Carling Cup third round. Crouch's attacking rivals Jermain Defoe and Robbie Keane were also on target at Deepdale as Harry Redknapp's side strolled into the last 16. The north London outfit have now managed 22 goals in eight games this season, making them among the most potent clubs in the country. Crouch, who has been forced to bide his time regarding first-team action in the Premier League, accepts that competition for places at White Hart Lane is fierce. However, he believes he has earned the right to play from the start when Tottenham entertain Burnley on Saturday. "When I'm given chances, I can only produce and try to stake a claim for a starting place," Crouch told the Evening Standard. "I would be disappointed to be on the bench against Burnley, because I want to play every game. "We've done pretty well this season, so I can't argue too much, but hopefully I've done enough."
