Brave Spurs bow out

Tottenham Hotspur bowed out of this season's Uefa Cup 3-1 on aggregate after a battling draw with Shakhtar Donetsk at White Hart Lane.[LNB] Trailing 2-0 from the last-32 first leg in the Ukraine, Giovani gave Spurs some hope with a fantastic finish in the 55th minute.[LNB]Frazier Campbell then had a clear penalty shout turned down when he was clattered by Mykola Ischenko in the box.[LNB]But Shakhtar finished the North Londoners off four minutes from time when Fernandinho arrowed an effort into the bottom corner.[LNB]Spurs boss Harry Redknapp rested his first-team ahead of the Carling Cup final against Manchester United on Sunday, with Wilson Palacios the only player to remain from the side that defeated Hull on Monday.[LNB]Redknapp picked out-of-favour Giovani, while Gilberto was also selected for his first appearance since getting hauled off at half-time against Spartak Moscow earlier this season.[LNB]First startYouth-team striker Jonathan Obika was also given his first senior start - having only played one reserve match this season.[LNB]The 18-year-old enjoyed a promising full debut, going close twice before the break as Spurs chased the tie.[LNB]But it initially it looked like Shakhtar were going to dominate as they did in the first leg. The visitors were unfortunate to be knocked out of the UEFA Champions League after getting a healthy return of nine points from their group and they looked dangerous when they broke forward here.[LNB]Jadson, helped by a fortunate ricochet off the referee, flashed a drive wide before crossing for fellow Brazilian Willian, who had a shot blocked as Spurs scrambled clear, while Fernandinho's shot in the 20th minute forced Heurelho Gomes into a low diving save.[LNB]Set-plays have been a problem for Spurs this season and the visitors almost exposed them twice in as many corners, with Gilberto having to clear off the line before Fernandinho was given space but nodded wide.[LNB]Spurs' response was to push forward, with Obika leading their attack. The hosts' bench was furious when Campbell was kicked in the stomach by Fernandinho but referee Paolo Tagliavento waved play on.[LNB]Punched airRedknapp's mood did not get any better when Gomes risked an embarrassing blunder by taking the ball around Olexandr Gladkiy - the Spurs boss turned his back and punched the air in disgust.[LNB]But there were less worries going forward. Bale was sent through by Tom Huddlestone but fired straight at Andriy Pyatov, then Pascal Chimbonda had a header saved before the break.[LNB]Obika almost got on the end of Chris Gunter's cross after the restart, then Giovani's moment came 10 minutes into the second half, his first goal since arriving from Barcelona.[LNB]Bale clipped the ball inside from the left and Campbell played a pass onto Giovani who surged forward and unleashed a vicious drive into the top corner.[LNB]He then could have levelled the tie moments later but was inches away from Gilberto's cross.[LNB]Campbell then had a strong penalty shout turned down when Razvan Rat brushed him and Ischenko slid in.[LNB]Dean Parrett and John Bostock were introduced as Spurs tried to force extra-time but the visitors eventually added to their aggregate lead when Fernandinho finished crisply from the edge of the area with four minutes left to end Spurs' hopes.[LNB][LNB]Tottenham Hotspur[LNB]Team Statistics[LNB]Shakhtar Donetsk[LNB][LNB][LNB]1[LNB]Goals[LNB]1[LNB][LNB][LNB]0[LNB]1st Half Goals[LNB]0[LNB][LNB][LNB]5[LNB]Shots on Target[LNB]6[LNB][LNB][LNB]6[LNB]Shots off Target[LNB]7[LNB][LNB][LNB]3[LNB]Blocked Shots[LNB]6[LNB][LNB][LNB]2[LNB]Corners[LNB]7[LNB][LNB][LNB]10[LNB]Fouls[LNB]14[LNB][LNB][LNB]3[LNB]Offsides[LNB]4[LNB][LNB][LNB]2[LNB]Yellow Cards[LNB]2[LNB][LNB][LNB]0[LNB]Red Cards[LNB]0[LNB][LNB][LNB]82[LNB]Passing Success[LNB]80.9[LNB][LNB][LNB]16[LNB]Tackles[LNB]29[LNB][LNB][LNB]81.2[LNB]Tackles Success[LNB]79.3[LNB][LNB][LNB]48.7[LNB]Possession[LNB]51.3[LNB][LNB][LNB]49.8[LNB]Territorial Advantage[LNB]50.2[LNB][LNB][LNB][LNB][LNB][LNB]
