Bochum sack manager Marcel Koller and let everyone know... except him

In a shambles resembling the best that Tottenham Hotspur could muster, German side Bochum announced they had sacked their manager yesterday before they had told him. Two years ago, Martin Jol was axed by Spurs, with fans and players learning the news during a UEFA Cup tie against Getafe, Jol discovering his fate by the murmurs and sympathetic looks doing the rounds at White Hart Lane that night. But Bochum went one better. They decided Marcel Koller had to go after the 3-2 Bundesliga home defeat against Mainz - but released their prepared statement on the club website before telling Koller. Blissfully unaware he was about join the ranks of the unemployed, Swiss Koller travelled home after training with the news hitting the world wide web ten minutes after he had taken training. Four hours later, the Bochum board met to rubber stamp Koller's auf wiedersehen following pressure from supporters as the side fell into the relegation zone. A club spokesman admitted: 'This is embarrassing - the press release had only been prepared in case it was needed. 'It appeared on our site due to a misunderstanding.' Koller said: 'It is now official, I have been dismissed - After a discussion with chairman Werner Altegoer, we both decided together to terminate the contract. 'I could feel that this dismissal was not easy for him. It is also painful for me.' Koller led Bochum into the Bundesliga at the second attempt in 2006 and has established them in the top flight over the last three seasons but he has paid the price for a poor start.
