Bassong delighted with debut

Sebastien Bassong admits he could not have wished for a better start to his career at Tottenham. The Cameroon international made his competitive bow for Spurs against Liverpool on Sunday, and grabbed the winner in a 2-1 victory. His second-half header was the first time the French-born centre-half has found the target in English football, having spent last term with Newcastle. With Tottenham currently enduring a defensive injury crisis, the 23-year-old has been thrown straight into the action by Harry Redknapp. He has immediately begun to repay his £8million transfer fee, but admits his impressive start to life in North London has been helped by the quality of those around him. "It is the perfect debut, my first game with Spurs, and I am really happy to score to get the win," Bassong told Sky Sports. "To win the first game is really good for the confidence and good for the team in the head and the mind. "But to play next to Ledley (King) is easy because he talks all the time and he helped me so I have had to work hard like him." "After beginning last season so badly, it was important to get off to a good start. Liverpool was always going to be a tough side," he said. "But, in terms of the team work and the work rate, we couldn't have asked for anymore. "It is the first game, a hot day, both teams were a bit tentative but, when we picked up the pace we looked the most dangerous. "When we caught them on the break, we looked at our best."
