Tottenham gave him the flick after nine months, but FC Basel have taken a decade to realise that Christian Gross isn't the right boss for them. To be fair, the Swiss coach is leaving his latest club after a trophy-laden spell. The White Hart Lane reject collected four league titles and four cup titles with Basel, and twice qualified for the Champions League, but his record of success was not enough to save him in the wake of a 4-1 loss to Grasshoppers on Sunday that ended their title hopes this year. In a lengthy statement on the club's website, the board paid tribute to his achievements but expressed disappointment that the club 'has failed to reach its most important goals of the season'. The board pointed to a loss of form since December, which is when Gross had been handed a new contract until 2011.
