Tottenham Hotspur have signed former Barcelona teenager Cristian Ceballos, the English Premier League club announced Monday.

Ceballos had been on the European champions' books since he was a schoolboy but has not made the progress the Spanish giants would have liked and was released from his contract last season.

However, the 18-year-old trained with Chelsea in March and then had a trial with London rivals Tottenham towards the end of last term where he impressed the Spurs' management.

Ceballos who can play as an attacking midfielder or forward, will now go into the club's development squad.

"Cristian trained hard and showed some real quality when he originally spent time here towards the end of last season and was even involved in some of the first-team training," said Spurs' technical co-ordinator Tim Sherwood.

"There was other interest in him too. He needs to be patient and if he can fulfil his potential we believe he can play at the top level."
