Assou-Ekotto feared for career
Benoit Assou-Ekotto has admitted he had doubts about his career during his recovery from a serious knee injury.
The 25-year-old left-back has flourished under Harry Redknapp in recent months and has just been voted Tottenham's Most Improved Player by supporters.
But it has been a long road back to the top for Assou-Ekotto,
who was injured at the start of 2007 and remained sidelined for 18 months.
He was treated alongside amputees in France and he believes the experience gave him a sense of perspective.
"The hardest part of the injury was when the specialist said it might end my career," said Assou-Ekotto.
"It made me doubt what was going to happen to me and it affected the way I am, my whole being.
"I spent about 10 months back in France, doing the first part of my rehab at a centre where there were people who had lost limbs.
"It was a very sobering experience for me because I was speaking to people who had their own personal stories and problems, and they certainly gave me hope for the future.
"It made me realise that although I had my injury problem, my situation could have been a lot worse."
Spurs will be looking to secure European football for next season when they travel to Liverpool on Sunday for the final game of the current campaign.
They need to win and hope Fulham lose to Everton but striker Jermain Defoe is in confident mood.
"It will be difficult but we have a good side, Liverpool know that," said Defoe.
The striker has only recently returned from a foot complaint and he is looking to make an impact at Anfield to boost his chances of being included in the next England squad.
"Hopefully, it would be nice for me to be involved, it seems like a lifetime since I was injured," he commented.
"It would be nice to get a couple more games there and be involved."
