Are you watching, Capello? Five stars staking their claim for a spot in the England squad

06 March 2009 09:21
England manager Fabio Capello has shown he has little regard for reputation, opting to select players on current form rather than past glories.[LNB]With that in mind, which players might just surprise us with a call up to the Italian's squad for England's upcoming matches?[LNB]The national side hosts Slovakia in a friendly at Wembley on Saturday March 28 and will then play Ukraine four days later in a 2010 World Cup qualifier on home turf.[LNB]Here is Sportsmail's guide to the players who could receive a phone call out of the blue from Mr Capello.[LNB] Safe hands: Ben Foster[LNB] Lennon starting to imagine Fabio will pick him again soon for England[LNB]MARTIN SAMUEL: Butt out Blatter - our recipe has best ingredients[LNB]HATCHET MAN: Redknapp should know that Lennon won't be an England player until he learns how to pass the ball properly[LNB] Ben FosterThe Manchester United reserve goalkeeper showed his talent in Sunday's Carling Cup final, putting in a Man of the Match performance and helping his team to a win on penalties over Spurs.[LNB]Sir Alex Ferguson has gone on record as saying Foster is a future England Number One, but the goalkeeper has made just seven senior appearances for Manchester United so far.[LNB]Foster has been on the fringes of the England set up since 2006, when he was placed on stand-by after Robert Green injured himself in a 'B' international. The 25-year-old didn't make it to Germany but won his first England cap in February 2007, making his debut at Old Trafford as Steve McClaren's England lost 1-0 to Spain in a friendly.[LNB]England goalkeeper David James, 38, is not getting any younger - why not try some young blood in the friendly against Slovakia?Call up rating: 4/5 [LNB] On fire: Aaron Lennon[LNB]Aaron LennonThe winger, still just 21, has been one of the better things about Spurs' inconsistent season, contributing five goals and featuring in every one of Tottenham's 27 league games.[LNB]The youngest Premier League player in history when he made his top flight debut for Leeds United aged just 16 years and 129 days in 2003, Lennon's lightning pace continues to be his major asset but his all-round game is improving year-on-year.[LNB]Lennon already has nine England caps to his name and has never played in a losing England side, contributing to seven wins and two draws in his international career. His last cap came under Steve McClaren in March 2007 in England's 3-0 win over Andorra, but Capello has so far overlooked him and Lennon has returned to the Under 21s.[LNB]Spurs boss Harry Redknapp praised Lennon after the winger scored two goals in Tottenham's 4-0 win over Middlesbrough last night, saying: 'He is in fantastic form, and you felt something would happen every time he got the ball. [LNB]'The little fella is flying at the moment. He's learning the game - he's only a kid. He's got all the equipment.'[LNB]Lennon is another relative youngster who would surely benefit from a run out in an international fixture, especially on current form.Call up rating: 4/5[LNB] Impressive: Mark Noble[LNB]Mark NobleThe midfielder may look like he's knocking on 30 but Noble is still just 21 and has established himself as a regular for West Ham and England Under 21s.[LNB]Stuart Pearce, however, did not name Noble in his latest squad, saying he wanted to give fringe players some game time ahead of this summer's UEFA European Under-21 Championship in Sweden, but could that mean a senior call up for Noble?[LNB]A combative, passionate midfielder, Noble's main problem is the England players ahead of him - how does he get a look in with the likes of Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Michael Carrick and Gareth Barry queuing up to get in Capello's starting XI? [LNB]Noble has time on his side, but could win his first senior international cap in the month his girlfriend, Carly, is due to give birth to the couple's first child. What a March that would be for the 21-year-old.[LNB]Call up rating: 2/5[LNB] Net gains: James Beattie[LNB]James BeattieThe Stoke striker has five senior international caps and made five appearances at Under 21 level but has not played for England since November 2003, when a Sven-Goran Eriksson side lost 3-2 to Denmark at Old Trafford.[LNB]Despite falling out of favour towards the end of his spell at Everton and spending 18 months in the Championship with Sheffield United, Beattie is a proven top flight scorer - as his well-taken strike last night against Bolton showed.[LNB]Furthermore, his record since joining Stoke City in January is impressive: how many other top flight strikers can boast of scoring five goals in seven games?[LNB]At 31, Beattie must think he is in prime form to return to the England set up, but can he compete with Rooney, Heskey and Agbonlahor? Maybe not, but he might be worth a call up in place of Peter Crouch.Call up rating: 2/5[LNB] Solid: Michael Dawson[LNB]Michael DawsonThe 25-year-old Tottenham central defender is probably Harry Redknapp's third choice central defender behind a fit Ledley King and Jonathan Woodgate, but Dawson has been ever-reliable when called upon this season by the Spurs boss. Good in the air, committed and dependable, Dawson is well thought of at White Hart Lane.[LNB]The defender has yet to win a full international cap but has been on the fringes since 2006, when Eriksson put him on stand-by for the World Cup. Dawson has also won 13 Under 21 caps for England.[LNB]Rio Ferdinand and John Terry would be Capello's first choice defensive pairing, but Phil Jagielka and Matthew Upson looked less than confident in their last England outings, so maybe there is room for the youngest Dawson brother?Call up rating: 1/5So, if you were Fabio Capello, who would you select? Do any of these players deserve a surprise call up to the national squad - or is there someone we've missed?
