Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor was on top form again for Tottenham, scoring twice in a 3-1 Premier League win over West Bromwich Albion and Senegal's Demba Ba slotted home the penalty that gave Newcastle a 1-1 draw at Manchester United.
In France, Senegal striker Moussa Sow scored his fifth goal of the season in Lille's 2-0 win over Brest, while Ghana's Ayew brothers, Jordan and Andre were both instrumental in Marseille's tremendous 3-0 win over league leaders Paris St Germain.
Other African standouts in Europe at the weekend were Arouna Kone of the Ivory Coast for Levante against Sporting Gijon in Spain and Mali striker Garra Dembele who scored the equaliser for Freiburg against Huffenheim.
ENGLAND
EMMANUEL ADEBAYOR (Tottenham)
The Togo forward struck twice as Tottenham continued their impressive run of form with a 3-1 win away to West Bromwich Albion -- Spurs' fifth straight Premier League victory. He opened the scoring when, after his penalty was saved, he reacted quickly to score from the rebound. Adebayor then sealed victory in injury-time when he he turned in Gareth Bale's cross.
DEMBA BA (Newcastle)
The Senegal striker held his nerve to help give Newcastle a point with a penalty equaliser in a 1-1 draw away to champions Manchester United. Newcastle were trailing when referee Michael Jones took his assistant's advice to award a penalty for Rio Ferdinand's challenge on Hatem Ben Arfa. There was a two-minute delay as United protested furiously but Ba kept his composure well before placing the penalty kick into the bottom right-hand corner.
YOUSSOUF MULUMBU (West Brom)
The former DR Congo international midfielder headed the Baggies into a deserved lead after glancing Steven Reid's first-time cross beyond Brad Friedel and into the bottom left corner but it was not enough as Spurs fought back.
DIDIER DROGBA (Chelsea)
The Ivory Coast international was largely anonymous in Chelsea's 3-0 win over Wolves ensured the Blues avoided a third successive home defeat. The Ivory Coast striker was restricted to a lone powerful shot and 13 minutes from time was replaced by fellow forward Fernando Torres.
FRANCE
MOUSSA SOW (Lille)
Last season's top scorer in Ligue 1, Senegalese international Sow claimed his fifth goal of the current campaign as Lille beat Brest 2-0 to reclaim fifth place in the table. Having been made to weather heavy Brest pressure in the second half, Lille made the game safe in the 88th minute when Sow met a low Eden Hazard cross with an assured finish after a swift counter-attack.
YOUSSOUF HADJI (Rennes)
Morocco international Hadji scored a remarkable goal as Rennes saw off an Evian fightback to register a 3-2 win that enabled them to keep hold of fourth place. Hadji had been on the pitch for only 10 minutes when he ran on to a lofted pass from Julien Feret and stumbled under pressure from a defender, only to stick out his right leg and hook the ball into the net while flat on his back. His goal brought Rennes level before Feret's late penalty gave the Brittany side victory.
ANDRE AND JORDAN AYEW (Marseille)
The Ayew brothers, sons of Ghana great Abedi Pele, enjoyed an unforgettable night as Marseille beat arch rivals Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 to bounce back from their damaging Champions League loss to Olympiakos. Younger brother Jordan, on for the injured Loic Remy, set up OM's second goal for Morgan Amalfitano, who crossed for Andre to head home the third goal in the dying stages.
GERMANY
GARRA DEMBELE (Freiburg)
Mali striker scored his first goal for Freiburg since his arrival from Bulgaria's Levski Sofia in July when he scored a 90th-minute equaliser in the 1-1 draw against Hoffenheim on Saturday.
The goal gave his team a valuable point with his team second from bottom in the German league.
MOHAMED AMSIF (Augsburg)
Morocco goalkeeper made only his third league appearance for the Bundesliga's bottom team as they celebrated their first ever home victory in the German league with a 2-0 win over Wolfsburg on Saturday. Amsif, 22, made several saves as midfielder Daniel Brinkmann put his side ahead before Albania striker Edmond Kapllani scored their second in the fourth minute of injury time to spark the celebrations.
SAMI ALLAGUI (Mainz 05)
The Tunisia striker played in Mainz's stunning 3-2 victory over Bayern Munich on Sunday which saw the Bavarian giants drop from from the top of the table to third and lifts Mainz up to 13th. Allagui was a constant threat to the Munich defence as Austria midfielder Andreas Ivanschitz put the hosts ahead.
ITALY
KWADWO ASAMOAH (Udinese)
The Ghana midfielder had a difficult evening as he was consistently run a merry dance by Roma's intelligent Argentine midfielder Fernando Gago. The Roma player got much the better of their personal duel but Asamoah did start the move that led to Udinese's clinching second goal. With his side winning 2-0, they are just a point off the top of Serie A.
MEHDI BENATIA (Udinese)
The Morocco centre-back was guilty of a couple of rough challenges but in general he had a solid game at the heart of the Udinese defence, keeping Roma's top scorer Pablo Osvaldo quiet.
CHRISTIAN OBODO (Lecce)
The Nigerian midfielder had a difficult time trying to keep Catania's Gennaro Delvecchio quiet. In fact, Obodo was conspicuous by his absence when Delvecchio twice found himself in excellent goal-scoring positions, although he wasted both. The Nigerian's team lost 1-0 and are now propping up Serie A.
SPAIN
AROUNA KONE (Levante)
The Ivory Coast striker scored twice in a 4-0 victory over Sporting Gijon which saw Levante consolidate their position among the top four in La Liga. For his first goal he was put through just inside the Sporting half by a defensive error and he kept his cool, finishing with aplomb.
SEYDOU KEITA (Real Madrid)
The Mali midfielder found himself back on the substitutes bench at Barcelona, despite Andres Iniesta being injured, and was not introduced until midway through the second half against Getafe. Although he worked hard to make his presence felt he was unable to influence the match and just minutes after he came on Getafe scored the only goal of the match in a major upset.
