Sheyi Emmanuel Adebayor has had his request to return to Togo for personal reasons granted by Tottenham Hotspurs, the club announced today via its Twitter handle @Spursofficial. In two tweets from the club, Spurs stated ‘We can confirm that Emmanuel Adebayor has been given permission to return home for personal reasons’. The first tweet was soon followed with another that allows for speculation, ‘This is a private matter and so we will not be providing any further comment’.

The implications are that the 30-year-old will miss Thursday's Europa League tie at Besiktas. In any case, he was already a doubt because he has been nursing an injury. Adebayor under Mauricio Pochettino has endured a difficult season at White Hart Lane, despite starting the season as vice-captain. The ex-arsenal striker - whose playing return was delayed due to a hamstring and back injuries plus suffering a virus, he has not played for Tottenham since returning from the November international break where his national side, Togo failed to qualify for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations to be held in Equatorial Guinea. .

Meanwhile, Adebayor was recently involved in a bizarre row surrounding 'juju' - a form of witchcraft - during which his mother was accused of placing a curse on him, but his brother later claimed that spiritual healers had "brainwashed" Ade.

Adebayor however has denied that he evicted his mother from her house over the claims but told Peace FM (A local radio station in Accra-Ghana): "Obviously I'm not a pastor, I am a footballer, so I cannot point out a witch..."
