Jermain Defoe has praised Tottenham's finishing school for helping him grab an astonishing five-goal haul against Wigan.

Defoe's master class in marksmanship during Sunday's 9-1 rout prompted Harry Redknapp to describe him as the best finisher in the Barclays Premier League.

But Defoe was quick to thank past masters Les Ferdinand and Clive Allen for their assistance in honing his skills.

He said: 'Every day for about 20 minutes a few of the boys stay behind with Les Ferdinand and Clive Allen. I always do my finishing after training so when I get in that situation on match day I'm familiar with it and can take the chance.

'I watched some of Clive's goals the other day on YouTube. He got 49 in one season and that is unbelievable.

'He's still got it and it was harder playing up there on your own like he did.

'You mention names like Andy Cole. I have his video at home. It'sthe same with Alan Shearer. I still watch their goals on YouTube.'

Having taken Defoe to West Ham from Charlton as a schoolboy, Redknapp later signed him for Portsmouth before persuading his chairman, Daniel Levy, to bring him back to White Hart Lane.

'I always watch Champions League games,' said Defoe. 'You're playing against the best. I'd be playing against the best defenders in the world.'
