Morecambe will play in the Football League next season for the first time in their 87-year history following a 2-1 Conference play-off final victory over Exeter City.

Danny Carlton scored a stunning 25-yard winner for Sammy McIlroy's side in the 82nd minute on his 199th appearance for the Shrimps.

Earlier, Lee Phillips had fired Exeter into a first-half lead with an eighth minute opener.

City goalkeeper Paul Jones saved a 30th minute penalty from Wayne Curtis, before Morecambe responded to level the match through Garry Thompson.

Then, with extra-time and the possibility of penalties looming, Carlton produced a brilliant strike to send the Lancashire club into League Two next season.

They will join Conference champions Dagenham & Redbridge in the league next term - the promoted pair will replace relegated Boston United and Torquay.
