Marquis scores again in Gulls draw

On-loan striker John Marquis took his Torquay tally to three goals in five games by converting a fifth-minute penalty in their 1-1 draw with Bristol Rovers at Plainmoor.

Referee Philip Gibbs adjudged David Clarkson, standing in a defensive wall, to have handled Billy Bodin's free-kick and Marquis converted from the spot.

Rovers deservedly levelled through towering striker Matt Harrold's fifth goal of the season, which came when he headed home a corner from the right on 25 minutes.

It was free-scoring Harrold's 80th career goal and his first since the end of November.

Lee Brown's corners were causing problems for the Gulls and home keeper Michael Poke was forced to punch out successive set pieces in the 12th minute.

At the other end Rovers defenders had to clear Jordan Chapell's angled shot off the line in a goalmouth scramble after keeper Steve Mildenhall had palmed out Damien Mozika's rising goal-bound strike from the right.

Torquay came closest to scoring again in the second half but midfielder Mozika's 85th-minute header spun off the outside of the post from Anthony O'Connor's cross from the right.
