Naismith strike downs Gulls

Accrington substitute Kal Naismith scored a superb 80th-minute winner as their 1-0 triumph inflicted a third straight Sky Bet League Two loss on relegation rivals Torquay.

Naismith, brought on 11 minutes earlier for fellow striker George Bowerman, took his season's tally to eight goals with a brilliant 18-yard finish after skipping past three defenders.

Torquay midfielder Joss Labadie will be wondering how he did not score after twice having far-post headers - both from Kevin Nicholson corners from the right - cleared off the line by Stanley defender Michael Liddle.

Gulls keeper Michael Poke was the star performer in the first half, tipping a header from his own team-mate Anthony O'Connor over the bar early on as the on-loan Blackburn central defender did his best to clear Nicky Hunt's throw-in from the right.

Poke then made a brilliant one-handed stop when Bowerman steered Piero Mingoia's cross from the right towards goal.

The Gulls were offering little attacking threat themselves and Naismith's sublime effort 10 minutes from time gave James Beattie's side the points.
