Town debut ends in stalemate

Fleetwood were forced to settle for a point on their Football League debut after being held to a 0-0 draw by Torquay.

The home side had the better of the first half, with Andy Mangan twice blasting over having been left unmarked at the back post.

The Cod Army continued to press after the break. Jon Parkin went close a number of times, the big striker a constant menace in the visitors' box.

Michael Poke was up to the challenge in the Torquay goal, pulling off a number of key saves including a finger-tip effort to deny full-back Shaun Beeley from 20 yards.

Torquay's best opportunities came during a brief second-half rally. Fleetwood keeper Scott Davies was alert to deny first Ian Morris and then Billy Bodin.

And Morris could have grabbed a late winner but his shot, teed-up by Bodin, flew just wide.

A surging run and pin-point cross from summer signing Dean Howell, met again by Parkin at the back post, almost handed Fleetwood the points but the home side, dominant for much of the game, were unable to apply the decisive blow.
