Buckle: Barnes was in demand

Torquay boss Paul Buckle revealed the Gulls beat off competition to secure the signing of Ashley Barnes. Buckle has been monitoring the 20-year-old Plymouth striker since the player spent a short trial spell at Torquay two years ago. With Scott Rendell (arm) ruled out by injury, Barnes' arrival until the end of the season is timely as United bid to end a seven-match streak without a win. Buckle said: "Ashley is an out-and-out centre forward. He's strong, quick and can score goals. He's much needed help for our front line. "(Plymouth head coach) Paul Mariner has been great to let him come to us. "Ashley could have gone to a couple of other clubs but has chosen to come here - which is an added bonus."
