The 29-year-old has found himself behind David Lucas in the pecking order at the County Ground this season but manager Wilson has signalled his desire to keep hold of the shot-stopper.

Smith's current deal was set to expire in the summer but he is now contracted to remain with the Robins until the end of the 2011/2012 campaign.

The goalkeeper told Swindon's official website: "I had to think about it for a while because obviously I haven't played a lot, but I won't have a better chance of playing in the Championship than I will here.

"The club has progressed massively in the last couple of years and I want to be a part of it.

"Swindon have shown their faith in me and they've made me feel wanted which was the big thing and made it easy for me in the end."
