Smith at the double for Robins

A Michael Smith brace helped Swindon to a 3-1 victory over newly-promoted Scunthorpe.

The home side were 2-0 up after just 13 minutes following goals from Massimo Luongo and then Smith. The Iron replied through Paddy Madden but Smith restored the two-goal cushion before the break. Scunthorpe's day was made worse when Marcus Williams was sent off late on.

Swindon raced into the lead when Luongo guided home Nathan Byrne's cut-back to give the Socceroo his first goal since the end of November.

Smith scored following good work from Louis Thompson, who set up the striker to smash home unchallenged from six yards out.

Madden pulled a goal back in the 20th minute when he raced behind the Robins defence to slot home Deon Burton's flick on.

Smith, rather fortuitously, got his second goal deep into first-half injury time after Ben Gladwin's cross rattled off the post and in off the forward from close range.

Williams and Thompson were involved in an altercation 10 minutes from time when the Iron full-back pushed his opponent in the neck - he was shown a straight red card for violent conduct.
