Connell brace sends Robins soaring

Substitute Alan Connell scored twice as Swindon defeated Shrewsbury 2-1 to surge to the top of npower League Two.

Swindon started the match in third place and Shrewsbury in fourth but the Robins' win took them a point clear of Cheltenham, who drew with AFC Wimbledon.

Shrewsbury had the better of the first half and took the lead in the 40th minute when Matt Richards headed in Mark Wright's corner.

Robins manager Paolo Di Canio sent on Connell at the start of the second half in place of Billy Bodin and the move soon paid off.

Shrewsbury goalkeeper Chris Neal failed to hold a shot from Matt Ritchie after 64 minutes and Connell snapped up the rebound.

Connell's opportunism gave Swindon their winner in the 76th minute when a shot from Luke Rooney hit the underside of the bar and the #120,000 signing from Grimsby swept home for his 10th goal of the season.
