Swans to stand their ground
12 Jun 2009 - 11:23:07
Swansea City chairman Huw Jenkins has confirmed that Wigan Athletic's delay in naming Roberto Martinez as their new manager is because he is seeking compensation from the Latics for assistant manager Graeme Jones and chief scout Kevin Reeves.
The Premier League club had to cancel their press conference on Thursday when they intended to name the Spaniard as Steve Bruce's successor at the JJB Stadium.
Martinez wants to take both Jones and Reeves with him to Wigan, but Jenkins said: "As everyone is already aware, we reluctantly agreed compensation with Wigan for Roberto a week ago after taking into account his wish to leave Swansea City.
"This compensation figure was only in regards to the loss of Roberto. We were asked at 10.45am on Thursday morning to waive our right to compensation for Graeme Jones and Kevin Reeves until next week.
"We felt this was not the right thing for us to do as a club and we owed it to our fans to remain in a position of strength.
"As with Roberto, we have made every effort to persuade both Graeme and Kevin to stay with us, but they made it clear that their allegiance was with Roberto first rather than Swansea City."
Discussions with Wigan are expected to continue next week.
