Premier League Signing Of The Season: Miguel Michu?
Michael Laudrup may be playing down the contribution of summer signing Michu to the Swansea cause, but teammates, fans and pundits alike are already labelling the Spaniard the bargain buy of the summer.
The £2m the Swans paid Rayo Vallecano is looking chicken feed compared to the millions shelled out by other clubs in the Premier League, and Michu has quickly become a cult figure at the Liberty Stadium.
He scored twice in three minutes near the end of the game to stun Arsenal at the weekend, and take his Premier League tally to ten for the season.
But Laudrup refused to single out Michu, despite him receiving high praise in other quarters. "We talked so many times about the amounts and the figures Swansea paid for Michu," he said.
"He's a great finisher, a great worker, but it's about the team, right now everybody's playing at a very high level which is great to see. It's just great."
Injured Swans keeper Michel Vorm, however, is a massive Michu fan and is unreserved in his praise for the man who has helped inspire the club’s charge up the Premier League table.
Vorm says of his teammate: “Michu is something special and, for just £2m, he's a bargain. He's not the quickest player but he's got great technique and a great touch in front of goal. He can score with his head, both feet and we’ve all see how hard he works for the team.”
Reflecting on his latest heroics at the Emirates, Michu said: “It was like a dream. I’m very happy here with my teammates, the gaffer and the club. I hope it continues like this.”
With 23 points on the board, Swansea are already on course for a comfortable survival campaign. And Michu reckons there’s no reason why they can’t aim even higher than their current seventh place.
“This team can go up and up,” added Michu. “I’m very happy we are on 23 points, but we need to keep it going. We have more tough games coming up, and we have to keep the same attitude that we have shown recently.”
Is there a better bargain buy in the Premier League so far this season?
