Keeper close to Swans deal
29 Jun 2009 - 11:41:10
Swansea City goalkeeper Dorus de Vries is close to agreeing a new contract to keep him at the club.
Talks appeared to come to a halt in May despite going on for several months, apparently signalling the Dutchman's exit from the Liberty Stadium.
However, new manager Paulo Sousa has seen de Vries perform a U-turn as he looks set to extend his stay at the Championship outfit.
The player's agent, Arnold Oosterveer, confirmed that a deal to prolong the shot-stopper's spell with the Swans is close.
"We are still in contact with Swansea and we are nearing an agreement," said Oosterveer.
The player also confirmed his wishes to remain at the Championship club.
De Vries said: "I've always said that I wanted to stay at Swansea because I know the set-up has been magnificent under Roberto Martinez.
"Things have now changed at Swansea and let's hope things will go in a positive way.
"I think the chairman has made a good step by appointing Paulo Sousa as the new manager."
"It's up to the chairman (Huw Jenkins) and my agent to get things sorted and hopefully it will be in a positive way.
"Pre-season training starts on Monday and I think the chairman wants it to get sorted before then.
"Everything can be really quick if things go well and let's hope they do."
Jenkins added: "We are all very keen to get him signed up, we will see what we can do over the next couple of days.''
