De Vries wants goals to flow

    05 Feb 2010 - 14:34:45

Swansea City goalkeeper Dorus de Vries has sent out a rallying cry for the club's strikers to start hitting the back of the net.

The shot-stopper has impressively kept 15 clean sheets in 27 Championship league games to help Swansea climb up to fifth place in the table.

They have also conceded just 20 goals - a statistic bettered only by leaders Newcastle United.

However, with Jason Scotland and Jordi Gomez leaving South Wales for Wigan Athletic alongside former boss Roberto Martinez, the goals have been harder to come by.

Speaking to reporters, de Vries said: "I'm really happy with the number of clean sheets we've had this season, though of course that's down to excellent defending as well as my own efforts.

"Defending starts at the front, yes, but attacking starts at the back and we are an attack-minded team who are always trying to get forward.

"We create chances but unfortunately so far this season, the goals have not been flying in often enough."

Despite this, de Vries is hopeful that recent acquisition Shefki Kuqi can add to the team's attack.

He added: "He is big and strong, he holds the ball up well and his record shows that he is a goalscorer.

"If he can help to add the goals we need and we carry on keeping clean sheets, we can definitely stay at the top end of the table."
