Jordi Amat has become Swansea City's latest Spanish acquisition as he has joined the Welsh side from Espanyol for 2.5 million ($3.8 million, 2.9 million euros), the Catalan club confirmed on Friday.

"The central defender Jordi Amat has become a new Swansea City player after an agreement was reached in the last few hours with Espanyol and the Welsh club completed the documentation on Friday," announced a statement on the club's website.

The Spanish U-21 international spent last season on loan at Rayo Vallecano where he made 27 appearances as the Madrid side achieved their highest ever league finish in La Liga and he scored a memorable goal from his own half in a 2-1 defeat to Valladolid in February.

Amat will join compatriots Michu, Angel Rangel, Chico Flores and Pablo Hernandez in South Wales as the League Cup holders prepare for a third consecutive season in the Premier League.
