The 37-year-old former Portuguese international, who was appointed into the Liberty Stadium hot-seat on Monday, made 51 caps for his country and played for such prestigious clubs as Benfica, Juventus and Inter Milan. Sousa won the Champions League in 1996 with Juve and the following year with German side Borussia Dortmund and will be looking to add to his managerial CV by guiding the Swans to promotion after leaving QPR in April. He held a long meeting with Monk on Wednesday, the day before pre-season training began, to discuss the club's future and the captain told the club's official website: "I was very impressed with what he had to say and I can't wait to get started. As a player he achieved virtually everything in the game and I'm sure, like me, the boys will be looking forward to sharing his vast knowledge. "He came across as very professional and knows exactly what he wants to do. You can only learn from people like that." "He is certainly going to tweak things here and there and I'm sure that over the next few weeks we will see his own methods coming through to improve us all as players."
