The Spaniard is expected to return to the Latics and replace Steve Bruce after "positive talks" with chief executive Brenda Spencer. Should the move go through it will complete a remarkable journey for the 35-year-old. When the Spaniard was plying his trade in midfield for Wigan in the lower leagues they were based at Springfield Park. The facilities were basic and far removed from the JJB Stadium, according to Martinez's former manager Ray Mathias. But Martinez was keen to further his football education in a foreign land, stayed six years up until 2001 and put in extra shifts in the afternoon. Mathias recalled: "Springfield Park was a bit run down and the training ground was not the best. It was always waterlogged. "But Roberto is a great professional. He got on with his job and was very thorough. He was first in and last out of the training ground most of the time. "He did extra shifts after training, concentrating on free-kicks and working on dead ball situations. He would stay for hours on end. "Roberto adapted very well to English football. He enjoyed it immensely. He was a playmaker, who passed the ball well. "Sometimes he would struggle with the physical side of the game but he would try to overcome that problem." Mathias is not surprised Martinez has graduated into management. He said: "Roberto always wanted to talk about football. He is very intelligent. "Sometimes you can pick up a player is really keen to get into the coaching and management side and he was one of them. He has done incredibly well at Swansea." Mathias added: "Steve Bruce put together an excellent team but lost one or two players in January. "If Roberto can use his connections in Spain I am sure he will do well at Wigan. It is massive jump for him but at least he has served an apprenticeship. "He is a lovely fellow, a smashing lad and can only wish him luck in the future."
