Whitehead having Stoke medical

Skysports.com understands Sunderland midfielder Dean Whitehead is close to finalising his move to Stoke City. Whitehead has emerged as a target for Potters boss Tony Pulis in recent weeks and the Premier League clubs have now agreed a fee. The 27-year-old has also settled on personal terms with Stoke and is currently undergoing a medical ahead of his switch to the Britannia Stadium. He had been wanted by former Sunderland boss Roy Keane at Ipswich Town, but Whitehead has opted to stay in the top flight. Stoke winger Liam Lawrence, who played with Whitehead at Sunderland, had been encouraging the former Oxford United man to join him at the Potters. The move to Stoke will bring an end to Whitehead's five-year association with Sunderland, for whom he has made 200 appearances.
