West Brom v Sunderland preview

24 April 2009 10:34
West Brom play host to Sunderland on Saturday looking to maintain their slim hopes of survival.

The Baggies are rooted to the bottom of the table and are nine points adrift of safety with relegation back to the Championship looking more a case of when and not if.

Sunderland can take a big step towards safety with three points at The Hawthorns and in the process push West Brom closer to the trapdoor.

Last weekend's victory over Hull moved Sunderland four points clear of the drop zone and they will be looking for another three-point haul in the Black Country.

West Brom are missing key midfielder James Morrison as he has been ruled out with a niggling heel problem.

Better news on the injury front for Baggies boss Tony Mowbray is the return of defender Shelton Martis and striker Roman Bednar after groin and hamstring problems respectively.

Sunderland are boosted by the return of former Baggies ace Kieran Richardson after a calf injury.

Black Cats skipper Dean Whitehead is also back in the squad after shaking off a leg injury.

Nyron Nosworthy has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a hamstring injury, while George McCartney is still absent.

Possible starting XIsWest Brom: Carson, Zuiverloon, Meite, Olsson, Robinson, Greening, Koren, Dorrans, Brunt, Bednar, Fortune.

Sunderland: Gordon, Bardsley, Ferdinand, Davenport, Collins, Richardson, Whitehead, Tainio, Reid, Cisse, Jones.
