West Brom v Sunderland - Live!

25 April 2009 14:35
90+3 The referee blows the final whistle. Comfortable win for the home side which gives them slight hope of a great escape. Sunderland on the otherhand, will see this as a missed opportunity to secure their safety and they now have a serious battle on their hands to remain in the top flight. Great performance from West Brom sends the home fans home with renewed optimism.[LNB]90+2 Fortune shields the ball in the corner before cutting inside and unleashing a vicious shot on goal out of nowhere, Davenport got the block in however[LNB]90+1 Koren does well to force a corner as the Baggies go in search of a fourth[LNB]90 Three minutes more for Sunderland to endure as the referee's asisstant signals added time[LNB]88 GOAL MENSEQUEZ! Great goal, a moment of quality as the little Argentinian on loan from San Lorenzo finds the bottom corner from 10 yards to further punish a sloppy second half display from Sunderland[LNB]87 Bardsley becomes the first player to get booked late in the day as his clumbsy tackle sums up Sunderland's day[LNB]86 Healy finally comes on to replace Tainio, too little too late perhaps[LNB]86 Fortune cuts in from the left flank and tries to beat Fulop at the near post when he had options in the centre, he hits the side netting[LNB]85 Carson races off his line to beat Richardson to the ball and win the ball back for his team, solid afternoon the keeper has had[LNB]84 The break comes to nothing and Sunderland have posession again. West Brom still looking comfortable though[LNB]83 Richardson's volleyed cross is cleared by Robinson and the homeside look to hit on the break[LNB]82 David Healy is warming up on the sidelines for Sunderland[LNB]81 Cisse is flagged offside as the Frenchman's performance continues to frustrate him[LNB]80 Richardson runs into traffic as he tries a solo run, West Brom have posession back with the throw-in[LNB]79 Cisse is letting his frustrations show with some suspect body language. Not much has gone right for him today[LNB]78 Mulumbu tries to release Fortune but Ferdinand recovers well to clear the danger[LNB]76 Mensequez's cross is well claimed by Fulop[LNB]75 15 minutes to go, Sunderland have one sub left to use to try and make a go of this[LNB]74 Mensequez drills a shot towards goal which is blocked and Brunt lets another one fly from the rebound but he doesn't get hold of it well. Goalkick to Sunderland[LNB]73 Cisse squares up to Olsson as tempers threaten to boil over at the Hawthorns, still no bookings as of yet though[LNB]72 Collins brings down Fortune out wide on the right but the quick freekick is wasted and Sunderland have posession back[LNB]71 Richardson, under no pressure, blazes a cross from one side of the pitch to the other, bringing a sarcastic roar from the Baggies fans[LNB]70 Bardsley's freekick is hooked away by Greening. West Brom seem to have a new found confidence and are playing attractive football[LNB]69 The home crowd are now cheering every completed pass as West Brom begin to dominate the game, Sunderland need to find their feet soon if they're to get back into this[LNB]68 Koren is penalised for pushing Bardsley over as he looked to be in on goal, seem a little harsh but Sunderland escape further punishment[LNB]67 Play has resumed and Ferdinand is back on his feet[LNB]65 Ferdinand is down receiving treatment after an aerial challenge and the home fans are in full voice at the Hawthorns[LNB]64 Cisse misses a golden opportunity as he fails to deflect Tainio's effort on goal towards the target, instead he turns it over the crossbar[LNB]63 Dorrans makes way for Mensequez. Thats Baggies last sub of the game as earlier Meite made way for Martis and Simpson made way for Mulumbu[LNB]62 Lack of communication between Cisse and Jones breaks down as Cisse's flick on is collected easily by Carson[LNB]61 That was Brunt's 9th of the season, if the Baggies don't avoid the drop, they might find it difficult to hang onto him[LNB]58 GOAL BRUNT! Mulumbu slides the ball across the face of the goal and Brunt gets his toe on the end of it to steer the ball home, 2-0 to the home side[LNB]57 Cisse is bundled over and the away side have a good opportunity with the freekick[LNB]56 Fulop sprints off his line to beat Brunt to the ball as Dorrans through ball almost put him in on goal, good alertness from the Sunderland keeper[LNB]55 Richardson chases a seemingly lost cause and does really well to keep the ball in and even win a throw in for his side, great determination from the winger[LNB]54 Another Sunderland sub as Malbranque replaces Edwards[LNB]54 Dorrans puts in a good cross but theres no Baggies striker there to attack it[LNB]53 Whitehead comes on to replace Reid[LNB]52 Brunt's cross is too long and the ball rolls out for a Sunderland throw[LNB]50 Richardson is flagged offside[LNB] Blackcats fan Chris Kirtley thinks his beloved Sunderland can overturn the deficit to claim a 2-1 win with the deadly duo of Cisse and Jones getting the goals[LNB]49 Jones is brought down by Dorrans just inside the Baggies half[LNB]48 Cisse tries to find Jones with a through ball but Jones is penalised for a push on Robinson[LNB]47 Carson wins a race against Cisse and puts the ball into touch[LNB]46 The second half is under way at the Hawthorns[LNB] Meanwhile fellow Baggie Jordan Casey also says a win for the home side with a 2-1 scoreline his prediction[LNB] Baggies fan Chris Penn in the Republic of Ireland thinks his side can go on to win 3-1.[LNB]45+2 There is the half-time whistle and it's the home side who go in with the lead at the break. Swedish defender Olsson got the goal after slack Sunderland marking from Greening's corner. The Blackcats will need to get something out of this game if they're to avoid being sucked deeper into relegation trouble, while a win might just give Baggie's fans renewed hope of staying up. Let me know your thoughts by e-mailing jamie.casey@bskyb.com[LNB]45+2 Ferdinand launches a freekick into the opposition's penalty box but Olsson is fouled and West Brom will look to see out the half with a lead.[LNB]45 Greening disappoints the home side as his shocking delivery is an absolute waste, evading everyone for a goal kick. All West Brom as the half nears an end[LNB]44 Greening's delivery is cleared but the resulting open play comes to a freekick to the home side just wide of the penalty area, more danger for Sunderland[LNB]43 Fortune almost finds himself with a chance in the box but before he can pull the trigger he's out crowded by the Sunderland defence, he has won a corner though[LNB]41 Sunderland come back strongly from the off and Richardson tries another long range effort but this time his effort is right down Carson's throat[LNB]40 GOAL OLSSON! The big Swede finds himself free to stab home a Greening corner, lurking around unmarked as the ball broke with time to find the bottom corner from 8 yards[LNB]39 Edwards finds himself by the corner flag but slips in his effort to get a cross in, gifting the Baggies posession[LNB]37 Brunt has his third effort on goal as he again cuts inside onto his left foot, he creates room well but his effort is way off target this time[LNB] "Sunderland to nick it 1-0" - thats from Jim, a Sunderland fan on an oil rig in India[LNB]35 Great effort. Great Save. Richardson lets one fly from 30 yards, it swerves away from the keeper but Carson gets his hand to it somehow and tips it wide for a corner[LNB]33 Over half an hour gone now at the Hawthorns, still a difficult one to call but Sunderland probably just shade it on posession so far[LNB]32 Tainio sees a thumping volley blocked on its way to goal, important challenge from Zuiverloon as that looked to be hitting the target[LNB]31 West Brom win a freekick in the center of the pitch[LNB]30 Brunt shows the disadvantages of playing a left footer on the right wing as he finds room for a cross on his right but slices the effort into the stands[LNB]29 Edwards goes close at the far post as Carson tips away Reid's cross but the angle is against him and it's a goal kick to the Baggies[LNB]28 Reid's freekick is met by Davenport but the ball finds its way safely through to Carson[LNB]26 Brunt again shows that he is the dangerman for the home side as he is given the room to turn and shoot again, he misses the target this time but the warning signs are there for Sunderland[LNB]25 Brunt cuts inside onto his left foot and finds room for the shot but a deflection takes the sting out of it and Fulop gets down quick to make the save[LNB]24 Edwards delivers a long throw into the area but Carson reacts well and punches clear[LNB]22 Reid whips in another inviting cross but Cisse doesn't attack and Robinson is able to chest the ball into the arms of Carson[LNB]21 Neither keeper has been troubled after the first 20 minutes at the Hawthorns, not a bad game so far but quality is lacking in the final third from both sides so far[LNB]20 Cisse is flagged offside from Jones' flick on, good link up play but the flag was up good and early[LNB] "3-0 Sunderland!!!" says Blackcats fan Dave Armstrong, who thinks Richardson can get on the scoresheet today[LNB]18 Zuiverloon tries a 30 yard effort but his ambitious shot doesn't trouble Fulop[LNB]17 Robinson's cross to too strong and sails wide for a goalkick to the away team[LNB]16 Dorrans does superbly to keep in a cross from Zuiverloon but Davenport reacted to the danger and clears for Sunderland[LNB]14 Reid's lofted through ball is well read by Carson who comes quickly off his line to collect the bouncing ball[LNB] Baggies fan Saul Sanders says "West Brom to win 3-1 Simpson Koren and Brunt to score and Cisse for them" - What says you Blackcats fans?[LNB]12 Koren finds room for a shot just inside the area but his effort is blocked amongst a crowd of Sunderland defenders[LNB]11 Brunt finds some space on the wing for a cross but his delivery evades everyone, goalkick to Sunderland[LNB]10 Greening wastes an opportunity at the opposite end as his corner is easily cleared again by Collins[LNB]9 Reid shows off his skills with nice control and a sharp volley, unfortunately for the Irishman his effort is straight at Carson who saves with ease[LNB]8 Davenport attempts a flick on from a Reid freekick but his tame effort bobbles wide[LNB]7 Reid delivers a great cross which troubles Olsson but Cisse fails to take a gamble and an opportunity goes begging. Good lively start to the game here.[LNB]6 Simpson wins a corner for the home side which Greening whips in but Collins rises highest to clear the danger for Sunderland[LNB]5 Taino attempts a through ball but Cisse misreads the pass and Carson collects with ease, Cisse applauds the Finn's effort[LNB]4 Cisse wins a freekick just inside the West Brom half after being brought down by Robinson[LNB]3 Edwards tries his luck for Sunderland at the other end this time but his wayward effort sails high and wide, West Brom failed to close him down though[LNB]2 Simpson signals the Baggies' intentions with an early effort on goal but his curled effort just misses at the far post[LNB]1 We're under way at the Hawthorns as both clubs look for the points to help keep them in the Premier League[LNB] The teams are out on the field as we near kick off.
