Goalkeeper Darren Ward has announced his retirement following his release from Sunderland on Wednesday. The 35-year-old last played for the Black Cats in December 2007 in a 1-1 draw with Aston Villa and retires after making a total of 582 career appearances. Although chances of first-team football at the Stadium of Light were limited, the shot-stopper insists that he still had the desire to play football but his body was telling him it was time to call it a day. However, the former Wales international also indicated that he may stay involved in the game in some capacity and has already thought about becoming a coach. "I still have a great appetite for football, but unfortunately my body hasn't, so it's a no-brainer for me to retire from playing," he told the club's official website. "I know that if I continue with my playing career, I could do myself long-term damage so sadly it's time to stop. "But I am keen to pass on my experience and am looking to get into coaching."
