Tribute To Kevin Ball

Sunderland owner Ellis Short has paid tribute to Kevin Ball for minding the shop on Wearside while the search was on for a new boss.

Ball stepped up from his role as U21 boss to take on the role as interim head coach following the sacking of Paolo Di Canio a fortnight ago, and oversaw three games – the Capital One Cup third round win over Peterborough United, and narrow league defeats against Liverpool and Manchester United, all at the Stadium of Light.

Ball was keen to be considered for the full-time post but was overlooked as Short decided to bring in former Brighton manager Gus Poyet as head coach.

Ellis Short: “I would like to thank Kevin, along with [coaches] Robbie Stockdale, Mark Prudhoe and Scott Pearce, who stepped in at a moment’s notice in what was a very difficult situation.

“Without any hesitation, they gave 100% to the cause.

"As usual, Kevin gave his all for the benefit of our club and we are very grateful to him for his ongoing commitment.”
