The Players - The Quality - So Why Poor Results?

Former Sunderland star Don Hutchinson questions why the Black Cats have struggled with "quality" players.

Don Hutchison: “Sunderland have been way too inconsistent. The players on paper are good and they do have a very strong squad.

“Graham is a good addition and I’d like to see him start matches up-front in a 4-4-2 beside Fletcher.

“Fletcher has been absolutely brilliant. Everyone thought the fee was too big when Sunderland paid £12m for him back in August.

"Nobody thinks that now. For me, he has been the player of the season for Sunderland.

“Money helps, of course. Buying quality such as Fletcher and Adam Johnson certainly helps and they type of players aren’t cheap.

“I would like to see one or two more come in during the summer, especially if they can be fitted in the back four.

“But it’s difficult for Sunderland. There are teams above them in the Premier League that spend an awful lot more. There are team below such as QPR who spend fortunes more.

“The money thing is a massive factor. Playing European football for Sunderland is definitely achievable, but it’s going to be hard for them.”
