Sunderland's John Mensah fears injury problems will destroy his season

Sunderland defender John Mensah is keeping his fingers crossed his ongoing injury misery does not ruin his African Nations and World Cup dreams.   [LNB]The 27-year-old Ghana skipper, currently on a season's loan at the Stadium of Light from Lyon, is due to meet up with his international team-mates next week ahead of the African Nations Cup in Angola.   [LNB]However, he will do so still nursing the hamstring injury which kept him out of Monday's 2-2 Barclays Premier League draw at Blackburn, the latest in a series of fitness problems which have limited him to just four league starts for the club.   [LNB] Fingers crossed: Mensah hopes his hamstring injury won't ruin his season [LNB]Mensah has been plagued by hamstring and calf injuries which medicsbelieve could stem from his back, and he is desperate to get to thebottom of the issue as he fights to be fit for his country's openingclash with Togo on January 11.  [LNB] He said: 'I am happy to be with Sunderland, but I am very sad that I have not been able to play because of injuries.   [LNB]'I don't understand why I have had so many injuries. I need thedoctors to tell me why, and they are trying to find out what it is. [LNB] Injury prone: Mensah has been restricted to just four league starts for Sunderland [LNB][LNB] 'I feel I can do well in the Premier League, and of course the African Nations Cup is a big goal for me and my country.   [LNB]'The World Cup is also next year, so this should be exciting for me,but all I can worry about is why I keep suffering these injuries.'[LNB]Mensah, who will miss the Black Cats' FA Cup third-round clash withnon-league Barrow at the weekend, has been in regular touch withnational coach Milovan Rajevac, but admits his injury could keep himout of the early part of Ghana's campaign.   [LNB]He told the Sunderland Echo: 'I could be out for three weeks now and I'm quite disturbed about the news.   [LNB]'I am still talking to the Ghana coach to see how things will go for me. I will join the squad and hopefully play.'
