Sunderland's record signing Asamoah Gyan puts World Cup heartache behind him
Published: 01 Sep 2010 - 09:26:56
Gyan was one of the stand out performers in Ghana's run to the quarter-finals, scoring three times as they became something of a Cinderella team. However, Gyan will also be remembered for missing a last-minute penalty against Uruguay that would have put Ghana into a semi-final with Holland. 'It was a major, major disappointment for me but that's in the past now. 'I have to concentrate on the positives, I had a good tournament, I've kept mentally strong and I'm looking forward to the future challenge with Sunderland.' Sunderland will now boast a front two valued at well over £20m as Gyan teams-up with the club's previous record transfer Darren Bent, who cost £10m. 'We have managed to bring in another top-class striker,' said manager Steve Bruce 'It is a great piece of business, amazing that the club record signing is done on the last day of the transfer window. 'Gyan works extremely hard for the team and will complement Darren up front. He is a traditional No 9 and we will benefit from that.'
