Johnson, 25, last played for his country in August in England’s game against Italy. It was his 12th senior cap but, since then, Johnson has not been included in any of Hodgson’s squads.
The wide midfielder is finding life tough domestically, though, following his hefty £10million move from Manchester City to Sunderland in the summer.
Nevertheless, Johnson has not given up hope of featuring for England again and is intent on producing his best form on a consistent basis for Sunderland.
He told Sky Sports News: “Playing for a winning team that’s flying is so much better, and it is difficult when you’re in a bit of a battle.”
“My personal form could be better and we are going through a tough time as a club. All those factors have a bearing on the squad.”
Sunderland’s relegation battle was dealt major blows today as it was confirmed that key players Lee Cattermole and Steven Fletcher will miss the rest of the season due to injuries.
Fletcher sustained damage to his ankle ligaments whilst on international duty with Scotland last week. Cattermole underwent surgery on a persistent knee injury today and will also be sidelined.
