Jordan Pickford set for Sunderland start against Shrewsbury

Jordan Pickford will start Sunderland's EFL Cup second-round clash with Shrewsbury as the club awaits news of Vito Mannone's arm injury.

England Under-21 international Pickford would have got the nod anyway, but Max Stryjek is likely to take his place on the bench with Mannone having been sent for X-rays on an elbow problem suffered in training.

Defender John O'Shea (hip) and midfielder Fabio Borini (toe) will miss out as they join Lamine Kone (back), Billy Jones (hip), Jan Kirchhoff (hamstring), Lee Cattermole (hernia surgery) and Sebastian Larsson (knee) on the sidelines.

Manager David Moyes is wary of being on the end of another upset against Shrewsbury, having bowed out of the FA Cup at their hands as Everton manager in January 2003.

Moyes said: "It was probably one of the worst days I had as Everton manager. I had a few, but that was probably one of them."

Shrewsbury manager Micky Mellon is again without the services of Shaun Whalley.

The midfielder has a calf injury and missed the 2-1 win over Chesterfield at the weekend.

On-loan Stoke winger Moha El Ouriachi deputised effectively, but the former Barcelona player is short of match fitness and Mellon may utilise him from the bench after he played for over an hour on Saturday.

There could be further changes to the side with Mellon telling the club's website: "The volume of games has taken its toll on us now and they can't keep playing week after week - I trust the squad."
