Sunderland signing Fraizer rested for pre-season tour after England exploits

Sunderland new boy Fraizer Campbell will not jet off with his team-mates when they head for Portugal and Holland this weekend. The 21-year-old striker, who completed a £3.5million move to the Stadium of Light last week from Manchester United, will miss out on the trip to Portugal and then the Amsterdam Tournament. Manager Steve Bruce has given him more time to recover from his efforts with England at the European Under-21s Championships this summer. Campbell will not play in tonight's friendly at Darlington, or the games against Portimonense on the Algarve and the Amsterdam Tournament clashes with Benfica and Atletico Madrid. He will link up with the rest of the squad on July 27 when they return from Holland. Fellow signing Paulo da Silva is currently back in South America finalising the immigration requirements of his move from Mexican side Toluca.  Meanwhile, Scotland keeper Craig Gordon will also not figure this evening as he continues his recovery from knee surgery.
