Sunderland move for striker

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce is closing in on a deal for Wolfsburg striker Patrick Helmes, according to reports in the north-east.

Bruce is anxious to bring a new striker to the Stadium of Light before the transfer window shuts on Wednesday with the Black Cats having managed just one goal in their first four matches. The Sunderland boss is also eyeing a move for a winger and second forward but it has emerged in the north-east that signing German international Helmes is his priority.

Helmes only joined Wolfsburg in January as a replacement for Edin Dzeko following his move to Manchester City but the German side appear to have paved the way for his departure by signing Rasmus Jonsson.Bruce started the new season happy with a team of strikers of Asamoah Gyan, Stéphane Sessegnon, Connor Wickham and Ji Dong-Won but Sebastian Larsson is the only Sunderland player to have found the back of the net so far.

Bruce admitted after Saturday's goalless draw at Swansea: "We need a bit extra up front."If we are honest, we have been lacking a bit in that department since Darren Bent left in January and we know that."
