The Sunderland manager has identified 11 players he is prepared to lose from his squad over the next three months as he looks to build on his first season on Wearside.
Part of the list: Steve Bruce will attempt to sell defender Anton Ferdinand this summer
He is close to adding new recruits, has already lined up a deal for Paraguay international Christian Riveros and is confident he can add the midfielder on a free transfer in the next fortnight after months of negotiations.
Bruce has decided not to extend Benjani's deal after an unsuccessful loan move from Manchester City but he is hoping deals can be arranged for defenders Alan Hutton and John Mensah.
Exit ahead: Sunderland are looking to offload George McCartney and Phil Bardsley
Bruce has also opened talks with Kieran Richardson and has secured another season from Dutch veteran Bolo Zenden.
Senior players Ferdinand and McCartney will be allowed to quit, if Bruce can find buyers, while players who have been out on loan Daryl Murphy, David Healy, Nyron Nosworthy, Teemu Tainio, Marton Fulop and Roy O'Donovan will all be allowed to leave.
