Sunderland cool interest in Neill

Sunderland have ended their interest in bringing former West Ham defender Lucas Neill to the Stadium of Light.Black Cats boss Steve Bruce said talks with the Australia international captain, 31, who is currently out of contract, had come to nothing. "We did speak to the player about the possibility of coming to Sunderland," Bruce told the Sunderland Echo. "But as things stand, nothing's going to come of that and nothing will unless circumstances change." Neill became a free agent when his deal with the Hammers expired in June. He joined West Ham from Blackburn - turning down Liverpool in the process - in January 2007, and was made skipper of the Upton Park club that summer. After making 89 appearances for the Londoners, and scoring one goal, he rejected the offer of a new one-year contract in June. At the time Neill's agent said his player "didn't feel it reflected his value as a player and captain".
