Sunderland boss Steve Bruce: We need to handle the pressure
Setback: Sunderland manager Steve Bruce[LNB] When Steve Bruce left the Stadium of Light on Tuesday night, reeling from another setback on home territory, he was escorted to his car by a club steward, and might have expected sympathetic words of encouragement.[LNB] But this is Wearside, where even the club employees speak the truth. `Typical Sunderland,' he told Bruce, offering an assessment of his side's less than spectacular form since they beat Arsenal a month ago.[LNB] `He was right,' Bruce accepts.[LNB] Sunderland have taken one point from four games since that win over the Gunners and now, with his side 10th in the table, Bruce wants more consistency. He said: `At this moment in time, the steward's right. When I first walked through the door here, I knew everything was in place. However you need a team that can handle the expectation to play here.[LNB] `The fans have seen it now for years and the expectation of fans is "Oh well, we can beat Arsenal on our day, but we'll go to Wigan and not perform". That's the mentality we have to eradicate.'[LNB] Bruce hopes Sunderland's United States-based benefactor Ellis Short understands that the process will take time.[LNB] Speaking ahead of Sunderland's tricky trip to Manchester City, Bruce said: `I think he's looking at the long term. It's very difficult for me to talk about him because I don't often see him, but I know his vision for the club is that he wants us to be in the top half of the table on a consistent basis. With his investment so far, he's entitled to feel that way, too.[LNB] `The one thing you do need, and he's intelligent enough to know this, is time.' [LNB] [LNB]
