Sunderland boss Steve Bruce's attempt to raid former club Wigan for left-back Maynor Figueroa ended in failure today.

Bruce was looking for one final piece of his jigsaw but Wigan were reluctant to sell the 26-year-old Honduran following Lee Cattermole's move to Wearside earlier in the summer.

The Sunderland manager has already signed seven players since takingover at the Stadium of Light and he wanted extra competition for GeorgeMcCartney at left full-back - despite selling a competent understudy inDanny Collins to Stoke earlier today.

Figueroa spent last season on loan with Bruce at Wigan and signed permanently after his departure.
