Sunderland are linked with a move for Bursaspor's French midfielder Alfred N'Diaye, with reports in Turkey suggesting a £2.5million bid was lodged with the Super Lig side.

N’Diaye, 22, possesses both the physical profile and creative flair Martin O’Neill has been crying out for in the engine room this season.

It would also suggest that a move for Tim Cahill, which has been discussed with his MLS side New York Redbulls, has been pushed onto the back burner.

MartinO’Neill acknowledges that numbers are required after Hull struck a deal to take David Meyler.

Martin O’Neill: “We need to do it. David Meyler – it looks as if that’s going to materialise now.

"Ji has gone out on loan. We don’t have that many left and we need to get some numbers in if we can.

“We need to improve the quality of the squad and the numbers, if that’s possible.

"We’ll try to utilise this month if possible. There’s loads of names been bandied about – we need to try and do something about (the squad).”
