Sunderland are looking at an economical solution to Darren Bent's departure as they consider signing Monaco striker Dieumerci Mbokani on loan.

The 25-year-old striker, who has interested Everton and Hoffenheim, has told the French club he wants to leave.

Sunderland manager Steve Bruce and chairman Niall Quinn, who have been offered Cardiff City striker Jay Bothroyd as an alternative solution to Bent, are long-term admirers of Carlton Cole but are put off by West Ham's £9million valuation.

Sunderland are also considering making a £2m bid for Stoke striker Tuncay Sanli.
