Stoke close on Whitehead

Skysports.com understands Stoke are in talks with Sunderland about a move for Dean Whitehead. Sunderland are open to offers for Whitehead and have given him permission to talk to interested clubs. Whitehead held talks with former Black Cats boss Roy Keane over a possible move to Ipswich at the weekend, but the switch failed to materialise. That has allowed Stoke to move in to try and lure the midfielder to the Britannia Stadium. Stoke boss Tony Pulis is believed to be a big fan of Whitehead and is keen to bring him in to bolster his squad. Stoke and Sunderland are thought to be close to agreeing a fee for the 27-year-old and Whitehead is expected to hold talks with Stoke officials later this week about making the switch.
