Spurs close on Crouch

Sky Sports News understands Tottenham are closing in on the capture of Portsmouth's Peter Crouch in a £10million deal, while Sunderland are negotiating to sign Darren Bent. Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has made no secret of his desire to bring Crouch to White Hart Lane, the club he began his career with and left for QPR for £60,000 some nine years ago. Redknapp hinted a deal might not be possible due to Pompey's valuation; however, it seems the clubs are close to agreeing a transfer in the region of £10m for the 28-year-old. The Spurs boss knows all about Crouch's ability having managed him twice and being at the helm of the Fratton Park outfit when he joined from Liverpool a year ago. Crouch had looked set for Sunderland earlier this summer, but the former Southampton and Aston Villa hit-man opted against joining the Black Cats as he wanted to remain in the south. While Crouch is one step close to returning to White Hart Lane, one player whose time at the club appears over is Darren Bent, who has failed to convince following his £16.5m switch. Sunderland boss Steve Bruce is keen to bolster his attacking options after the club opted against taking up Djibril Cisse's option this summer and the England international fits the bill.
