Skipper Cattermole eyes euro push

Sunderland skipper Lee Cattermole is targeting a concerted push for Europe over the Christmas period. The 22-year-old led the Black Cats to a 1-0 victory over West Ham on Sunday which saw them climb into seventh place in the Barclays Premier League table. But with Fulham, Bolton and Blackpool waiting in the wings either side of a Boxing Day trip to Manchester United, Cattermole is confident they have a chance to further their chances of securing qualification for European competition for the first time via the league. He told the Sunderland Echo: "You can see the club is going places and we all need to keep pulling together and working hard. No-one has said it yet, but I think we all believe we can go somewhere. "We are going into a good run of games and we have to make the most of them. The gaffer [Steve Bruce] pulled us to one side in training last week and said we need to try to get 10 or 12 points this month to get us into the top six. "We have made a decent start and that's helped with the league position. Last week, we were seventh, but there were a lot of teams on the same points. This week, we have moved clear of some of those sides. This period for the club is a big period."
