    Six-month lay-off for Campbell

    01 Sep 2010 - 09:22:54

Sunderland manager Steve Bruce expects Fraizer Campbell to be sidelined for six months after scans showed the striker damaged cruciate knee ligaments during Sunday's 1-0 win against Manchester City.

David Meyler suffered a similar injury last season and Bruce is bemoaning his misfortune.

"We've had two cruciate knee ligament injuries in five Premier League games with Meyler getting injured at the back end of the season," he told the club's official website.

"We could certainly do with a bit more luck in that department. We're devastated for Fraizer and hopefully he can make a speedy recovery. Everybody at the club wishes him well.

"He's had a wonderful start to the season and that's what usually happens. Meyler had had a wonderful start too. That's football, but it's deeply frustrating."

Meanwhile, Bruce is relieved to have finally landed his main summer transfer target after snapping up Ghana international Asamoah Gyan from Rennes.

He added: "The injury to Fraizer heightened our thoughts and it's unfortunate what's happened. But I couldn't be more delighted to get the boy in. He's something different. I think the crowd will enjoy watching him.

"He wears his heart on his sleeve, playing with great energy and enthusiasm. He had a great World Cup but we already knew what he's all about as we've been tracking him for a long time.

"This is a great deal for us. Asamoah's got character and that makes him the player he is. I've been watching him for a few years now. He first caught my eye when Ghana played in London and we have monitored him since then."
